Arkansas mom fears Medicaid cuts will impact family health, financial stability

The bill contains deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits. Erika Oliver and her four children could lose access to Medicaid. The bill is set to slash nearly a trillion dollars from Medicaid and food assistance programs. “This sounds like it’s from a horror movie. That’s not the America I grew up learning about,” says Oliver. “It is unfortunate and frankly sad that my Democratic colleagues have spent months scaring people like Ms. Oliver simply to score political points,” says Arkansas Congressman French Hill, D-2nd District. “I want her and families across Central Arkansas to know that this bill does not take benefits away from those who truly need them,” says Hill.

In a narrow party-line vote, the massive package of tax and federal spending cuts, the so-called “Big, Beautiful bill”, now heads to President Trump’s desk, meeting his Independence Day deadline.

The bill’s biggest critics worry about its changes to Medicaid and is set to slash nearly a trillion dollars from Medicaid and food assistance programs — leaving millions of working-class families bracing for impact.

The public health program has been a lifeline for many, including one arkansas mother and her four children.

With $4 trillion dollars in tax cuts, no more taxes on tips or overtime, and dramatic cuts in federal spending, affecting programs that could impact arkansans like Erika Oliver.

“Hope, hope that our representatives, the people that we elected, will listen to their constituents,” says Erika Oliver.

“Work harder to help take care of those needs. I’m going to do what I can to help cover those,” says Oliver.

“So, I’m going to be away from my kids more, I’m going to be working harder which is harder on my body that’s already recovering from a traumatic accident. I’m not going to be able to be there for my kids, the way they need me to be as their only parent, if I’m on the road all the time, working to cover their medical bills. And my daughter, I don’t think $25,000 is something I can afford because I make less than that in one year. I can’t afford her medication if she loses medicaid access.

The bill contains deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits.

Analysts warn more than 11 million Americans could lose coverage, with rural communities and low-income families hit hardest.

“This sounds like it’s from a horror movie. That’s not the America I grew up learning about. That’s not the America that I was taught about in school,” says Oliver.

“Because we’re supposed to take care of each other. Who’s looking out for us?”

2nd District Congressman French Hill commented on Oliver’s story saying, “Ms. Oliver’s story is heart-wrenching. I want her and families across Central Arkansas to know that this bill does not take benefits away from those who truly need them. In fact, it strengthens Medicaid for our most vulnerable citizens: single mothers, children, seniors, and those with disabilities. It is unfortunate and frankly sad that my Democratic colleagues have spent months scaring people like Ms. Oliver simply to score political points.

“I can’t imagine the stress she must be feeling. The truth is, this bill removes illegal immigrants from the program and asks able-bodied adults without children to work, volunteer, or pursue education for 20 hours a week. Those savings help ensure Medicaid can continue serving the Arkansans who truly need it, including Ms. Oliver and her children.”
