‘As good of a time as any’: UofL Health CEO says he retired effective immediately
Tom Miller, CEO of UofL Health, has “resigned effective immediately,” the nonprofit confirmed. Miller said he chose to retire and has been working with the board on a succession plan. Miller had been in the role for more than six years, taking over in January 2019. An interim CEO will be named by the board “in the coming days,” according to the organization’s statement.”I’m almost 68 years old, worked hard my whole life and it’s time to do the next thing, which is be at the beach,” he said. “We’ve got so many health care heroes whose only dedication is to try to improve the health of the community we serve,” Miller said.
In an interview, Miller said he chose to retire and has been working with the board on a succession plan.
The chief executive of the University of Louisville’s hospital and health care system is no longer with the organization.
UofL Health CEO Tom Miller, who was hired in 2019, has resigned effective immediately, the health care organization confirmed to The Courier Journal on June 25.
“As UofL Health’s first CEO, Tom led the organization through unprecedented growth to become a $2.7 billion health care organization and Louisville’s third largest employer,” the statement said. “The UofL Health Board extends its appreciation to Tom for the system’s strong position in the community.”
In a brief phone interview, Miller told The Courier Journal he had decided to retire — “I’m almost 68 years old, worked hard my whole life and it’s time to do the next thing, which is be at the beach,” he said.
Miller said he informed UofL Health of the decision earlier in the day, but he’d worked with the board on “succession planning for two years.”
“It had been in my plans for a while. There was an agreement,” he said. “There’s never a great time, but this was as good of a time as any, so I worked with the board to plan this.”
An interim CEO will be named by the board “in the coming days,” according to the organization’s statement.
Miller had been in the role for more than six years, taking over in January 2019 after previously serving as president and CEO of Tennessee-based Quorum Health. He’d also worked for other hospital systems in Tennessee and Indiana in a career that spanned more than three decades before he arrived in Louisville.
He had a reported compensation of more than $1.3 million as of 2022, according to nonprofit tax records filed with the IRS, an increase of about $500,000 from his first year on the job.
UofL Health operates nine hospitals, four medical centers and several other facilities in Louisville and surrounding counties.
Miller said he appreciated the “team effort by everyone” in the health care system to “make a difference in the community.”
“The word ‘health care heroes’ is a term that used to be used a lot during COVID but is not used much anymore,” he said. “We’ve got so many health care heroes whose only dedication is to try to improve the health of the community we serve, with the board, our physicians, our nurses and all of our providers. I just have to say thank you for the seven years that I’ve been here.”
