SAO PAULO : At least eight people were killed today when a hot air balloon with 21 passengers caught fire in southern Brazil, said the governor of Santa Catarina state, where the incident occurred.

“Eight fatalities and 13 survivors,” governor Jorginho Mello said on X.

Videos taken by bystanders and carried on Brazilian television showed the moment when the balloon erupted in flames above the coastal town of Praia Grande. The weather conditions were clear.

The basket carrying the passengers plummeted dozens of meters to the ground in flames.

An investigation was launched to determine the cause of the accident.

Praia Grande, on the Atlantic coast, is a popular destination for hot-air ballooning in Brazil.

That was the second fatal balloon accident in the country in just a few days. Less than a week ago, a woman died during a ride in southeastern Sao Paulo state.

At least eight people have been killed after a hot-air balloon crashed in Brazil, according to the governor of Santa Catarina state.

Jorginho Mello said on X that 21 passengers had been on board the balloon when it crashed on Saturday.

The tourism balloon caught fire during the flight in early morning hours, crashing in the city of Praia Grande, according to the state fire department.

Mr Mello said that there were 13 survivors and that rescue workers were at the scene.

Thirteen survivors were transported to nearby hospitals, according to the fire department.

Mr Mello wrote: “Accident update: 21 people on board – 8 fatalities, 13 survivors. Our teams continue to provide all necessary support to families and victims. We continue to monitor the situation.”

At least eight people have died after a hot-air balloon caught fire and tumbled from the sky in Brazil.

A further 13 people were injured in the incident in the southern state of Santa Catarina on Saturday morning, according to local officials.

Shocking footage shared by local news outlet G1 showed billows of smoke coming from the balloon in flames as it hurtled towards the ground and crashed into a rural area near a health centre.

Horrifying videos captured the moment the balloon appears to crumple before plummeting down, with reports suggesting at least one person jumped to escape the blaze mid-air.

Of the victims, four died after being burned in the basket and another four in the fall, G1 reported.

Miraculously there were survivors who were all taken to hospitals, Santa Catarina’s military fire brigade said, adding that 21 people were on board in total, including the pilot.

“We are in mourning. A tragedy has happened. We will see how it unfolds, what happened, why it happened. But the important thing now is for the state structure to do what it can,” governor Jorginho Mello said in a video on X.

Mr Mello said he has asked authorities to head to the municipality “to do as much as possible to rescue, to help, to take to hospital, to comfort the families”.

He added: “We continue to monitor the situation.”
