Be There or Be Square: Why You Need to Show Up to Sports Games This Semester
The Excitement of WashU Sports
Towards the end of last semester, weekends at Washington University in St. Louis were synonymous with thrilling sports events. Francis Field became my go-to spot, where I passionately watched the WashU women’s soccer team dominate. As the temperature dropped, my halftime snacks evolved from hot dogs to comforting hot chocolate, and the excitement among fans surged. The anticipation of the team potentially clenching their second-ever national championship permeated every match.
The Need for Greater Acknowledgment
Despite the women’s soccer team’s incredible run, there was surprisingly little buzz on campus outside of the stands. Even as the team maintained their unbeaten streak and aimed to improve on last year’s runner-up position, many students remained unaware of their accomplishments. This disconnect between the team’s success and student awareness prompted a vital conversation.
Building a Stronger Sports Culture
It is time to change this narrative. It’s a common belief that a robust sports culture enhances community bonds and instills a sense of institutional pride. Participating in something grander than ourselves—whether through clubs, study groups, or joyous gatherings on Mudd Field for WILD—creates cherished memories. Sporting events offer this feeling of unity and shared excitement.
The Thrill of the Game
Imagine the charged atmosphere when WashU’s men’s basketball team scored a last-second, game-winning shot during the NCAA Tournament’s second round. This intense overtime victory propelled the Bears to their first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 2009, compelling crowds to storm the court in celebration. These exhilarating moments exemplify the high stakes and joys that WashU sports bring to fans.
Recognizing Excellence Across Teams
Contrary to the indifference some might feel, WashU teams are consistently performing at extraordinary levels. Every winter sports team currently ranks in the national Top 25. Notably, the women’s track and field team secured the top spot at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams participated in the NCAA Tournament last year, with the men’s team reaching conference play ranked fifth in the nation. Additionally, our athletes have set records, won prestigious awards, and achieved significant career milestones.
Challenging the Misconception
The narrative that WashU is not a “sports school” is uninspired and inaccurate. It’s not that students are inherently uninterested, but there is a lack of momentum to attend games. By fostering excitement and encouraging attendance, we can reshape this perception.
Sports as Social Opportunities
Games present ideal social experiences—whether you want to engage with peers, enjoy a night out without staying up late, or bypass age restrictions of bars. Here are a few perks of attending:
- Free admission to all home varsity games with a WashU ID.
- A chance to socialize and still be in bed by 9 p.m.
- Avoid costly Uber rides; games are right on campus.
Stay Informed and Engaged
As editors of the Student Life newspaper, we ensure you remain updated with comprehensive game recaps, Athlete of the Week interviews, and in-depth sports stories. This source of engagement helps you stay informed about WashU sports, offering numerous reasons to invest in our teams.
The Essence of a “Sports School”
A university becomes a “sports school” not just through talented athletes but equally through enthusiastic fans. Our athletes have consistently proven their excellence, bearing the first part of the equation. It’s time to meet them halfway by showing up as dedicated supporters.
With great athletes and a supportive fan community, WashU can embody a thriving sports culture. So, gather your friends, don your WashU colors, and immerse yourself in the excitement of university sports. Witnessing remarkable athletic feats and experiencing collective joy will ultimately enrich your college experience.
Join the wave of enthusiasm. Be part of the energy. Be there, or be square.
