BASEBALL: STANDISH WINS FIRST JPC TITLE

Standish-Sterling arrived in the Jack Pine Conference this season as the new kid on the block.

And the Panthers announced their presence with authority.

No. 2-ranked Standish-Sterling clinched the outright league title with a 2-0 win over Clare, then dueled to a 5-5 tie in the nightcap.

“I’m really proud of the guys for winning the JPC,” coach Ryan Raymond said. “They have really come together recently and are pulling for each other, which all good teams do. Now we can focus on getting ready for the postseason.”

Standish (28-2-2, 19-0-1) had a tooth-and-nail fight with second-place Clare in Game 1. The Panthers scratched out runs in the first and third innings then held on in a game that featured just three hits. Sam Briggs and Rylee Blanchard notched the lone hits for Standish while Preston Kann drove in a key run.

Sam Brigges fired a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts, with Brock Bartlett recording the final out for the save. Dane Alexander denied the no-hitter with a bunt single in the fourth inning for Clare.

Clare scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to leave Game 2 in a deadlock. Sam Briggs knocked three hits and Trace Collins two for the Panthers. Ben Briggs came through with 3.1 innings of solid relief.

And Pinconning wasn’t in the giving mood.

Zach Laures went 7.2 innings, striking out 10 while allowing just two hits for the Game 1 win. Blake Kareus recorded the final out for the save for the Spartans (20-12, 12-8).

Laures, Calvin Holland and Ryan Kowalczyk each had two hits for the Spartans, but they were stuck on zero until extra innings. Landon Cooley, Landen Enciso and Laures opened the eighth with three straight singles and Isaiah Hoffman added a two-out RBI single for the win.

“Zach Laures had everything working, kept hitters off-balance and was ahead in the count all game,” coach Casey Pashak said. “We hit some balls hard all game but couldn’t get the big hit until the eighth.”

Hoffman pitched five innings of two-hit ball in the nightcap and Kareus worked two scoreless innings for the JPC sweep. Holland had two hits and two RBIs while Enciso added two hits and Laures drove in two runs.
