BayCare aligns with Northwestern and its renowned medical school
BayCare has signed a deal with Northwestern Medicine. Officials say the collaboration is a critical step in the nonprofit’s bid to expand its academic health system. Northwestern operates 11 hospitals and more than 200 diagnostic and out-patient centers. BayCare plans to house its academic and research operations in a 36-acre office park that it purchased for $145 million earlier this year. The site will be named the BayCare Academic Health and Research Corridor. The collaboration will lead to new educational and training opportunities for physicians, residents, and students, officials said. It will also expand clinical research and improve training and education for current and future physicians.
Northwestern is a nationally renowned academic health system through its partnership with the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Its deal with BayCare will provide more access to advanced medical treatments, expand clinical research and improve training and education for current and future physicians in the Tampa Bay region, officials said.
“This isn’t the beginning, it’s the next step in a journey we’ve been focused on for years,” BayCare President and CEO Stephanie Conners said in a news release. “West Central Florida deserves more access to academic medicine and by entering into a strategic collaboration with Northwestern Medicine, we will accelerate our trajectory as an academic health system.”
Academic health systems are designed to innovate and produce leading edge treatments by integrating clinical care with research and education. Locally, Tampa General Hospital bills itself as the region’s only academic health system through its 50-year partnership with USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.
BayCare already partners with the University of South Florida and Florida State University for sponsorship of residency programs in family and sports medicine. The collaboration with Northwestern will lead to new educational and training opportunities, making BayCare a more attractive option for physicians, residents, and students, officials said.
Headquartered in Chicago, Northwestern operates 11 hospitals and more than 200 diagnostic and out-patient centers. Its flagship facility, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, has been named to the Best Hospitals Honor Roll by U.S. News and World Report for 13 consecutive years.
The Feinberg School of Medicine received $742 million in research funding and awards in 2024, with 15 of its departments among the top 20 National Institute of Health award recipients.
“We are focused on collaborating with likeminded organizations that are driven by providing patients with greater access to world-class compassionate care, closer to where they live and work,” Northwestern President and CEO Howard Chrisman said in a statement. “By collaborating with BayCare, we have the opportunity to train and educate the next generation of medical professionals and transform the clinical offerings to patients in West Central Florida.”
