The Belmont County wagon train set out this weekend, offering riders a chance to relive the pioneer style of travel with horse-drawn carriages. For upwards of thirty years, the wagon train has embraced its history, embarking on the National Road to pay homage to how people used to travel on the nation’s first federally funded highway.

West Tollgate and Cumberland Point sponsored the event to show appreciation for the riders.

“It’s so awesome that the community can support their organization and mission. Just by seeing them and posting them on social media,” said Taylore Frasnelly.

The wagon master has hosted the event for many years, riding with family and friends. The group departed from Morristown, visiting Cumberland Point Care Center to engage with residents and the community. The journey continued past Fiesly’s Tree Farm before concluding.

“I think it’s nice to do this because there’s not many doing this anymore and it’s keeping tradition going. We’ve been doing this for thirty some years now, so it makes it kind of nice,” said Dick Gummere.

The wagon train event is held every first weekend of June.
