Just 3 of 12 duels won: Inter clash raises big questions over Barcelona’s midfield anchor Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona lost 4-3 on aggregate to Inter Milan in the Champions League. The defeat was a harsh reality check for Hansi Flick’s men. Frenkie de Jong played a brilliant 120 minutes but his off-the-ball game wasn’t sufficient. Flick needs to look at the team and identify if he needs someone more defensively minded to play in the number 6 role. The hope right now is that La Masia starlet Marc Bernal can return from injury and play in this role, for which he has already shown to have the aptitude. Regardless, this is just the start of something special and this experience will only hold the players in good stead going forward.

FC Barcelona suffered a crushing blow to their treble hopes as they bowed out of the Champions League this season with a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Inter Milan at the San Siro. For the neutral, it was a tie for the ages, with both teams showing incredible resilience to not give up.

It was a game that see-sawed right from the start of the first leg and one look at the aggregate (7-6) tells you just how tightly fought it was. There is a lot of learning for Barcelona’s young team to take back from this tie and it is only set to make them stronger in the upcoming seasons.

Hansi Flick will surely be going back from this game with notes on where his team can improve and how he can potentially change things going forward to make sure such a situation doesn’t repeat itself in the future. Among those might include a revisit of the pivot situation.

Frenkie de Jong is not the solution

Make no mistake, this is not a criticism of Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman actually played a brilliant 120 minutes against Inter Milan. He has been in excellent form since the start of 2025 and in a run that has extended for almost 5 months now, the Dutchman has more often than not come out on top.

The Barcelona midfielder has held his own in the pivot position for much of this period and hardly put a foot wrong. He has improved his off-the-ball game a lot and has exceeded expectations but on the biggest stage against physically imposing teams like Inter Milan, his off-the-ball game isn’t sufficient.

As per stats from SofaScore, Frenkie won just 3 out 12 duels on the night. Breaking it down further, he won just 2 out of the 9 ground duels that he attempted and just 1 out of 3 aerial duels. It clearly isn’t a lack of effort as the numbers show but Inter were able to escape his attempts to win the ball back.

Someone more defensive minded

Hansi Flick needs to take a look at the team and identify if he needs someone more defensively minded to play in the number 6 role. The hope right now is that La Masia starlet Marc Bernal can return from injury and play in this role, for which he has already shown to have the aptitude.

Frenkie is brilliant with the ball at his feet and pairing him with someone like Bernal could bring the best out of both players. The Dutchman would be disappointed with what happened last night at the San Siro and he isn’t necessarily at fault but that is what his game is at the moment.

The Inter Milan defeat was a harsh reality check for Hansi Flick’s men. While it showcased just how much they had grown as a team in recent times, it also reminded them that they are far from the finished product. Regardless, this is just the start of something special and this experience will only hold the players in good stead going forward. Let’s wait and see how it plays out.

Korea denies Mexico third World Cup team gold of the year

The women’s team at the World Cup in Australia has won nine gold medals. The men’s team has won eight gold medals and one silver medal. The women have won seven gold medals, the men have won four. The team is aiming for a ninth gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The final will be held in Rio in 2016, with the final set to take place in Rio on February 14.

Korea ended Mexico’s perfect streak in the compound women’s team finals at the third stage of the 2025 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Antalya.

Andrea Becerra and Mariana Bernal were a part of the gold-winning sides at Central Florida and Shanghai – the prior two stages – with Dafne Quintero shooting in America whilst Adriana Castillo featured in China, the latter returning for the Antalya final.

Mexico’s bid for a third straight World Cup gold was halted by Korea, a nation more renowned for recurve dominance than compound. So Chaewon, Sim Sooin and Han Seungyeon fired nine arrows into the 11-ring, outscoring Mexico’s six to build an eight-point lead, 241-233, after the fourth and final end.

“It’s an honour to get the gold medal, and I can’t believe how long it’s been since we won those medals and we need to work better in the rest of the events this year,” said Chaewon, part of the Korean team that last medalled with bronze in Antalya 2018.

“Even though I made a mistake when I hit a nine, I was still able to get the score back and hit 11,” added world record holder Seungyeon, reflecting on how key the 11-ring was at Antalya Beach Park. “I believed in myself and never gave up.”

Korea’s recurve women made history in Paris last year, becoming the first team to claim ten consecutive Olympic gold medals in the event.

Their dominance is unquestioned, grabbing headlines globally – but Korea’s compound women? Less so.

While they have earned five bronze and silver medals at World Cups over the past seven years, gold has eluded them since the 2017 Salt Lake City victory, with 2019 Vegas Shoot champion Chaewon the last to stand atop the podium on the premier circuit.

Olivia Dean will make her Hyundai Archery World Cup final four debut this Saturday in Central Florida 2025, the opening stage of archery‘s premier international circuit.

At just 18, Dean is the only US archer qualified among the compound individuals. In the women’s field, Carson Krahe, Abigail Winterton and Alexis Ruiz all missed the cut, just as reigning Hyundai Archery World Cup Final Champion James Lutz, along with Sawyer Sullivan, Curtis Broadnax and Kris Schaff, were eliminated on the men’s side.

“It was definitely unexpected,” said the 2024 Vegas Shoot winner. “I know I’m capable of shooting that well, but I’ve been struggling a little bit with confidence recently, so to do it feels really good.”

“I just tried to focus on staying in the moment and shooting one arrow at a time.”

Despite qualifying in a relatively strong position as the 10th seed out of 31 entries on Tuesday, Dean was not at all satisfied with her performance across the 72-arrow round.

Rather than rest on her laurels, she returned to the shooting line to make adjustments to her bow, determined not to let her first circuit semifinal on home soil slip away.

Dean, who beat both teammate Krahe and European Indoor Champion Elisa Roner in shoot-offs, may not be the most vocal on the range but possesses a steely determination that has already taken her so far in her fast growing career.

Venezuela denounces ‘abduction’ of toddler whose parents were deported by US

Venezuela believes her father was among about 250 men sent to El Salvador’s notorious Cecot prison. The administration has said many of those deported are members of criminal gangs, including Tren de Aragua, but has provided limited evidence to back that claim. Lawyers and family members of many deportees deny the allegations. The child remains in the care and custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement and is currently placed with a foster family. The department branded both parents “criminal illegal aliens” and said their expulsion had been approved by a judge.

The administration has said many of those deported are members of criminal gangs, including Tren de Aragua, but has provided limited evidence to back that claim. Lawyers and family members of many deportees deny the allegations.

The DHS did not say where it deported the girl’s parents to, but Venezuela believes her father was among about 250 men sent to El Salvador’s notorious Cecot prison for the country’s most violent criminals.

Maikelys Antonella Espinoza Bernal with her parents.

Espinoza-Escalona’s mother-in-law said the family saw him at Cecot in an online video.

“They were shaving his head,” she told ABC. “They had him dressed in all white, and he was on his knees.”

His sister said he was just a barber with a clean criminal record.

“There’s the American dream they talk about, but it’s the American horror.”

In a weekend statement, the DHS claimed the father, Espinoza-Escalona, was a Tren de Aragua lieutenant who “oversees homicides, drug sales, kidnappings, extortion, sex trafficking and operates a torture house”.

The girl’s mother “oversees recruitment of young women for drug smuggling and prostitution,” it said.

DHS said the girl was “taken off the deportation flight manifest for her safety and welfare”.

“The child remains in the care and custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement and is currently placed with a foster family”.

The department branded both parents “criminal illegal aliens” and said their expulsion had been approved by a judge.

Tren de Aragua has been designated a “foreign terrorist organisation” by the Trump administration, which has paid El Salvador millions of dollars to lock up nearly 300 deported migrants it claims are criminals and gang members.

At least one of them, Salvadoran Kilmar Abrego Garcia, was found to have been wrongly deported, but both Trump and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele have washed their hands of his case.

Last week, Venezuelan prosecutors said they were investigating the “forced disappearance” of a citizen detained in the United States in January, but whose whereabouts are now “unknown”.
