The Better Business Bureau says a scammer will find any way to exploit, even through tragedies.
“A lot of Americans do want to help and be supportive, so they will use this opportunity to take advantage of consumers who, in good conscience, are just trying to help the victims, in this particular case in Texas,” said Denise Groene, vice president of operations for the BBB.
Unfortunately, the chance of wandering into a scam is increasing.
“That can be anything from an unsolicited phone call claiming to be from an illegitimate charity. It could be from a fictitious crowdfunding platform that was set up to try to lure you into donating to a specific family member who’s been impacted, as well as a text message that comes in unsolicited,” Groene said.
Even social media plays a role, and the rise of AI poses a more concerning threat.
“It’s hard to identify, especially on social media, if something is legitimate or if it’s an article that was created by AI,” Groene said. “Maybe somebody put in some information on ChatGPT, it generates an article, and then it generates an image to go along with that article, and it looks legitimate.”
“It can go viral in minutes and be shared hundreds of thousands of times when in fact the story may not even be true,” Groene said.
BBB says it’s important to be cautious and stay vigilant as technology progresses. Soon, finding the difference between true and false information will become even more difficult.
To avoid falling into the trap of tragedy scams, BBB recommends taking a close look at any images and articles before reposting. Images can even be reverse-searched to ensure their source.
Experts also say the most important step is to check the source of the post, text, or call.
“The key is don’t solely go off of something that’s on your feed. Make sure you’re doing your due diligence and taking the time to check it out, especially before you give any money,” Groebe said.
She also encourages the public to ask questions. An organization or charity should be able to identify its process and the details of its organization.
