Biden has an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Should it have been caught earlier?

Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to the bone. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men. An estimated 3.5 million men were living with prostate cancer in the United States in 2022. The prognosis for Biden is hard to predict without knowing the details of his tumor or how he will react to treatment.”He could be receiving the best medical care that we have to offer as a nation and not be screened for prostate cancer,” an oncologist says. “Excellent care means not under-testing. It also means not over-testing,” another doctor says of Biden’s care. “Everything sounds bad when a patient is diagnosed with a cancer that is an aggressive patient,” a doctor says. ‘The prognosis from this point is very much dependent on really how much cancer is actually outside of the prostate,’ another doctor adds. ‘I would be very surprised if his PSA was not followed regularly, even at his age,’ says another doctor.

Biden diagnosis draws well-wishes, questions and conspiracy theories

Biden shared a picture of himself seated with former first lady Jill Biden and their cat, Willow. Trump inaccurately referred to Biden’s diagnosis as “stage 9,” an apparent reference to a pathology report giving his cancer a Gleason score of 9 on a scale that rises to 10 and indicates an aggressive cancer. Prostate cancer specialists told The Washington Post that it is not unusual for someone Biden’s age to skip screening for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which, when elevated, can indicate a higher risk of prostate cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which makes medical recommendations about preventive services such as screenings, explicitly recommends against PSA screening in men 70 years and older. For men ages 55 to 69, the decision should be an individual one, it says.“Unbelievable this was missed, but the truth is, his physician was more concerned about assisting with the political cover up than providing world class medical care,’” Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) said.

Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis is unusual but not unheard of, doctors say

Biden, 82, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer on Friday. The cancer has spread to the bone, his office said, but seems likely to respond to treatment. In around 8% of cases, the cancer has already metastasized — or spread to other organs — by the time it’s diagnosed. Doctors don’t always agree on who should get screened for prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that men in their 50s and 60s get screened every two years. But the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says that men ages 55 to 69 should merely discuss getting a blood test with their physician. The task force is weighing new guidelines for prostatecancer screenings, with many doctors calling for a more expansive and emphatic recommendation.. According to his annual physical exam from February 2024, Biden had an enlarged prostate, but he had not been diagnosed with prostate cancer by that point. According, he had a physical exam in 2019, but it did not indicate that a screening had taken place.
