The father of the survivor has said that his daughter was not raped, and that she just fell from a car. IIM Calcutta has said the complainant was not from the institute as claimed. The accused has been remanded to police custody till July 19 under Sections 64, 123, 127(2), 115(2) and 76 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), with his clothes and phone seized for forensic tests. The man has been arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged by the woman, police said on Saturday. However, the accused’s lawyer filed a bail plea stating that the incident was consensual, the court was told. The court was convinced by the preliminary medical evidence that the victim’s statement was supported by the Preliminary medical evidence, according to the court’s statement.
In a shocking development in the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta rape case, the father of the survivor has said that his daughter was not raped, and that she just fell from a car. Talking to reporters, the woman’s father said that he got a call from his daughter at 9:34 pm, and she told him that she had fallen from a car but did not specify the location.
“Then I went out to find her, rescue her, but she wasn’t there. Then, after looking out for her, I found that she was near the pg. I mean the location was showing pg, Somnath Pandit Street,” her father said.
“So I went there and after asking about her, I found out that Haridevpur PS has rescued her and kept her there. They said that a complaint about such an incident (rape) has been made, but then I found out that no such kind of issue has happened. Then the police said we’ve taken a FIR and arrested a person,” he added.
He said that his daughter was neither tortured nor did someone misbehave with her. “She said she fell from the car and became seriously ill. Later, she fainted. She does not know where she is,” he told the reporters.
Not only this, in an official statement, IIM Calcutta has said the complainant was not from the institute as claimed.
“The administration of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has been made aware of a serious complaint involving one of our students and the Complainant is not of the Institute. We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and are fully cooperating with the law enforcement authorities, who are currently conducting an investigation. The concerned individual has been taken into police custody, and the legal process is underway,” Prof. Saibal Chattopadhyay, Director-in-Charge, IIM Calcutta, said.
He added that the institute is committed to ensuring that due process is followed while safeguarding the dignity, safety, and privacy of all individuals involved.
IIM Calcutta statement
“We wish to affirm that the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has zero tolerance for such incidents and remains steadfast in upholding a safe and respectful campus environment. We are also taking all necessary steps to support the process of ongoing investigation and ensure that institutional protocols are adhered to,” he said.
The letter further read that during this course of investigation, the institute will refrain from commenting further at this time, but will continue to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action as needed, in alignment with the law and our internal policies.
“We urge everyone to avoid speculation or dissemination of unverified information which might lead to further confusion and hamper investigation and allow the investigative authorities to carry out their responsibilities independently and fairly,” it added.
The Complaint
A woman had complained that she was allegedly raped by a student inside a hostel of IIM Calcutta, located in Kolkata’s Joka area, police said on Saturday, reported PTI. The accused has been arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged by the woman.
In her written complaint, the woman alleged that she was raped at the boys’ hostel of IIM Calcutta. The woman approached the Haridevpur Police Station late on Friday evening, alleging that she had been raped by a student of the institute, following which an FIR was registered.
The woman has alleged that she was called to the hostel for a counselling session, where she became unconscious after consuming a drink and was assaulted.
The accused has been remanded to police custody till July 19 under Sections 64, 123, 127(2), 115(2), and 76 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), with his clothes and phone seized for forensic tests.
In a statement dated July 12, IIM Calcutta confirmed the accused is in custody and assured full cooperation with law enforcement, reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on campus misconduct and urging restraint from speculation to ensure a fair investigation.
Public Prosecutor Saurin Ghoshal said, “After arresting the accused, he was produced before the court today. The accused’s lawyer filed a bail plea, stating that the incident was consensual. However, we requested police custody. We convinced the court that the victim’s statement was supported by the preliminary medical evidence…”
Talking to ANI, the mother of the accuses said she recieved a call from her son’s friend around 11 in night. “He told us that my son has been detained and he doesn’t know the reason… We have no clue why our son has been arrested… We want to meet our son and talk to him…”
“He was in the final year of his college… We do not know anything here in Kolkata. Where the Police Station is or the Court. My son is innocent. He has come so far to study. He will never do such a dirty thing,” she added.
