For the last few years, the Boston Celtics have undoubtedly been one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. However, coming off what has been a busy offseason for the front office, they are not viewed in such a light in 2026.

In light of Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury, the Celtics have dismantled their once-expensive core. Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis were dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers and Atlanta Hawks, with Anfernee Simons being the most intriguing player Boston received in return. Boston’s depth also took a hit with players like Luke Kornet and Al Horford (likely) departing in free agency.

Though the Celtics still have an All-Star in Jaylen Brown leading the charge, but it appears that isn’t enough to keep them in the mix. In NBA.com’s latest Eastern Conference power rankings, Boston dropped all the way down to No. 12. The only teams below them were the Charlotte Hornets, Washington Wizards, and Brooklyn Nets.

Looking at their roster, the Celtics still have a collection of talent that should keep them competitive. However, the roster has one glaring weak point. That being a lack of depth in the frontcourt. As of now, Boston will attempt to replace Kornet and Horford with Luka Garza, Neemias Queta, Amari Williams, and Xavier Tillman.

Based on their moves this summer, it’s evident that the Celtics are viewing 2026 as a gap year to allow Tatum to properly recover. In the meantime, the rest of the group will attempt to step up in hopes of keeping the team in the mix somewhat in the East.
