Sony has suddenly bumped the price of a bunch of titles on the Brazilian PS Store, leaving local players infuriated.

While the move affects both first-party and third-party titles, it’s retroactive, affecting even launch titles like Demon’s Souls.

The manufacturer cited “challenging market conditions, including fluctuating exchange rates” as the reason for the change.

In the case of new release Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the price jumped from R$349.90 (~$63.80) to R$399.90 (~$72.98) just a few days after launching.

Many have pointed out that, in the case of third-party games, titles can be purchased much cheaper on storefronts such as Steam. Hardware is also particularly pricey in Brazil, too.

All of this is culminating in a deeply unsatisfied player base.

Here’s how Sony justified the price change, in a translated statement published by GameVicio:

“Sony Interactive Entertainment has updated the pricing of PlayStation Store content due to challenging market conditions, including fluctuating currency exchange rates. As a result, Brazil has seen an increase in PS Store games and add-on content. Pricing decisions vary by region and are based on the current economic environment.”

PlayStation has, historically, attracted a worldwide audience to its consoles. But while the PS5 has kept pace with the PS4 globally, it’s trending behind in Europe primarily due to high price points across the continent. It looks like a similar narrative could emerge in South America, too.

And while the United States has largely been shielded from a lot of these price changes, it’s not like it’s invulnerable either – the PS5 Digital Edition went up from $399.99 to $449.99 a couple of years ago. Who knows what toll tariffs could take in the future?
