Blue Jays 8, Brewers 4: An uncharacteristically sloppy performance
The Milwaukee Brewers lost 8-4 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 31 at Rogers Centre. The Brewers entered Sunday having won 21 games in the month of August, tying a franchise record (1978, 2011) Brandon Woodruff allowed a season-high 10 hits, eight runs (five earned) and two walks with three strikeouts over 4 ⅓ innings and 89 pitches. Jackson Chourio did collect four hits in his second game back from the injured list, with William Contreras, Brice Turang, Sal Frelick and Andruw Monasterio also recording two-hit games. The Blue Jays lead the National League Central Division 6-5-5 in the 6.5-game lead over the Brewers in the American League Central (85-53-5) and the NL East (66-48-2) in the season’s first half. The game was the finale of a three-game series between the two teams, which ended Sunday afternoon.
Shaky defense. Baserunning blunders. Substandard pitching.

Brandon Woodruff was hit around hard, as was his counterpart Max Scherzer, but at least some of the damage was incurred in part due to the struggles of the defenders behind him – namely Jackson Chourio, whose misadventures in center field led directly to a game-turning, three-run rally in the fifth.
Chourio did collect four hits in his second game back from the injured list, with Contreras, Turang, Sal Frelick and Andruw Monasterio also recording two-hit games.
The Brewers entered Sunday having won 21 games in the month of August, tying a franchise record (1978, 2011).
A golden opportunity wasted
With Scherzer out of the game after four innings and 67 pitches, the Brewers promptly loaded the bases on a Chourio single and consecutive bungled fielding plays by reliever Brendon Little.
It resulted in nothing, however, as Frelick hit one back to Little, who got the force out at home, Andrew Vaughn struck out and Isaac Collins grounded out.
And as good teams like the Blue Jays do, they made the Brewers pay by rattling off four straight one-out hits in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-4 lead and chase Woodruff.
Chourio, however, was to blame for a lot of the mess as he twice either misread or took bad routes to fly balls that should have been caught, allowing the onslaught to continue.
Woodruff allowed a season-high 10 hits, eight runs (five earned) and two walks with three strikeouts over 4 ⅓ innings and 89 pitches.
The back-and-forth continues
Woodruff walked No. 9 hitter Myles Straw with one out in the second and he scored on a George Springer double off the wall in left, leaving the Brewers in a 4-2 hole.
Turang opened the third with an opposite-field homer to left, his 16th of the season and 10th of the month.
Chourio followed with a double when rightfielder Addison Barger lost the ball in the sun, which allowed the ball to drop. Two batters after that, Contreras singled high off the wall in right field to drive in Contreras.
Sal Frelick followed with a single of his own but Contreras was doubled up at third base when he tried tagging and advancing on a flyout to center by Andrew Vaughn as Milwaukee settled for the 4-4 tie.
Toronto then answered with three straight two-out singles in the bottom of the frame to re-take the lead at 5-4.
An eventful first inning
Chourio legged out a one-out infield single, showing his hamstring is truly good to go. Then, two batters later, Contreras slugged a first-pitch home run out to left to give the Brewers a quick 2-0 lead.
It was the ninth homer this month for Contreras, who’s up to 17 and counting on the season.
Woodruff began his outing by plunking Springer, then with one out Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a grounder to the right side. Vaughn fielded it and threw to second base for at least a forceout, but the ball sailed wide as there appeared to be some miscommunication between Turang and Monasterio as to who was covering.
The runners ended up on second and third. Two batters later, Nathan Lukes doubled to left to tie it and a batter after that Ernie Clement singled Lukes in to leave Milwaukee in a 3-2 hole.

Blue Jays 8-4 Brewers (Aug 31, 2025) Game Recap
Toronto Blue Jays beat Milwaukee Brewers 8-4 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Myles Straw and Nathan Lukes each drove in two runs, George Springer reached base three times and scored twice. William Contreras hit a two-run home run, his 17th, and Brice Turang added a solo shot. Milwaukee failed to set a club record with a 22nd win in August, going 21-9 this month.. Jackson Chourio went 4 for 5 and score twice in his second game after missing a month because of a strained right hamstring.
Tommy Nance (2-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning as Toronto improved to 59-4 when scoring at least five runs.
Nance was one of five relievers who combined for five shutout innings in relief of a shaky Max Scherzer, who allowed four runs and a season-high nine hits in four innings. Manager John Schneider said Scherzer was removed because of tightness in his upper back.
William Contreras hit a two-run home run, his 17th, and Brice Turang added a solo shot, his 16th, but the Brewers failed to set a club record with a 22nd win in August. Milwaukee went 21-9 this month.
The Brewers still own the best record in baseball at 85-53.
Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio went 4 for 5 and scored twice in his second game after missing a month because of a strained right hamstring.
Milwaukee made a costly fielding error in Toronto’s three-run first inning, and had runners thrown out at third base and home plate in a mistake-filled performance.
The AL East-leading Blue Jays were also sloppy. Left-hander Brendon Little made two errors and outfielder Addison Barger lost a fly ball in the sun.
Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff (5-2) allowed eight runs, five earned, and a season-high 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. Woodruff also gave up five earned runs in his previous start, Aug. 25 against Arizona.
Key moment
The Blue Jays chased Woodruff and scored three runs with four straight one-out hits in the fifth.
