Business Professor’s Podcast Reaches Nearly 1 Million a Month
David D. Schein, MBA, JD, Ph.D., Full Professor of Marketing & Management in the Cameron School of Business at University of St. Thomas-Houston has managed a successful online presence since 2018. “Business Law 101” was rated the No. 1 business law podcast out of 80 that were ranked by Million Podcasts. Audience numbers average more than 900,000 monthly for “ business law’s” ‘Saving America’ and about 90,000 daily for ‘Bad Deal for America.’ ‘Business Law’ expanded to cover current business legal matters, especially major court decisions. ‘My continuing research on multiple current topics means that I am up on business and political topics, which I believe supports the work that I do in the classroom,” Dr. ScheIn said.
A licensed attorney with a background in business law and employment matters, Dr. Schein knows that training employers for these important areas goes well beyond the in-person classroom setting. After writing his first book, “The Decline of America: 100 Years of Leadership Failures,” Dr. Schein received some advice that helped him launch into the online world.
“I was fortunate to be introduced to an agent, and I learned that writing books is only half the battle,” he said. “Getting the book sold is the other half of the battle. Eventually, I was introduced to a PR pro who helped me start webcasting. That was the beginning of my webcast, ‘Saving America.’”
When Covid hit, Dr. Schein began teaching online and his producer, Rachel Harrison, suggested taking some of his recorded lectures and turning them into short videos on YouTube and Spotify naming it, “Business Law 101.”
“These spots joined the ‘Saving America’ pieces,” Dr. Schein said. “Later, ‘Saving America’ expanded into interviews and panel discussions, ‘The Intersection of Politics and Business.’ I also released my second book, ‘Bad Deal for America,’ in February 2022. ‘Business Law 101’ expanded to cover current business legal matters, especially major court decisions.”
A faculty member in the Cameron School of Business since 2013, Dr. Schein has maintained this thriving podcast and seen audience numbers rise. In early 2024, he worked with Brushwood Media Network, which provides podcast content to Apple and other major podcast networks, and USA Global TV and Radio, which is in video form. Audience numbers average more than 900,000 monthly for “Business Law 101” and about 90,000 monthly for “Saving America.” Recently, “Business Law 101” was rated the No. 1 business law podcast out of 80 that were ranked by Million Podcasts.
While he keeps his podcast work separate from his classroom lessons, he encourages students to stay up-to-date with current events.
“My continuing research on multiple current topics means that I am up on business and political topics, which I believe supports the work that I do in the classroom,” Dr. Schein said. “Our students spend more time on digital media than any place else. My concern is to direct them more to current events and news, especially business news. Too much time is spent away from what is happening both internationally and domestically. Recently, I have been mentioning to students that in a job interview, if they are the one up on current events, they will have a competitive advantage in those interviews.”
