4th of July travel at Reno-Tahoe International Airport
The Reno Tahoe Airport Authority expects 16,000 passengers over the 6th and 7th of July. Real IDs are in effect, so if you don’t have one, you should bring your passport with you. There has also been a lot of construction around the airport, but there aren’t any projects going on right now that will impact passengers. “We are looking at pretty much the same amount of travelers as last year, so not a big increase,” says RTAA Public Affairs Manager Nicolle Staten. “I’m going to get surfing lessons on my birthday, which is on July 8th,” says Gavin and Griffin Vernon-Smith.
They expect 16,000 passengers over the 6th and 7th of July.
To put those numbers into perspective, they have 10,000 to 12,000 passengers on typical days.
Nicolle Staten, the Public Affairs Manager for the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority, says, “We know every year we’re going to be busy during this time. We look at last year and we compare so we can be ready for everybody. We are looking at pretty much the same amount of travelers as last year, so not a big increase.”
During holiday weekends such as this one, the airport makes sure they staff up and have therapy dogs around the airport ready to give you comfort.
As a reminder, Real IDs are in effect, so if you don’t have one, you should bring your passport with you, or else TSA may give you additional screening and delay your time getting through security.
You’ll also want to arrive early to make sure you stay on time.
There has also been a lot of construction around the airport, but RTAA says there aren’t any projects going on right now that will impact passengers.
Staten goes on to explain, “You’re going to start seeing some construction, but nothing too impactful at this time. Luckily our next project is also going to be our concourses, so starting in 2026, you’re going to start seeing construction, but nothing too big happening right now.”
We also asked some passengers passing through the airport what their plans for the weekend were.
Jordan Davis and Kylie Rowe tell us their plans: “We’re heading to Utah; we’re going to go to Stadium of Fire Rascal Flatts, so we’re excited. You took all the words out of me! I didn’t even get a chance; we are that excited for this trip! We even dressed the part.”
Gavin and Griffin Vernon-Smith tell us about their plan to go to Hawaii: “I’m going to get surfing lessons on my birthday, which is on July 8th, and we’re also traveling for the 4th of July, too.”
Jordan Davis and Kylie Rowe go on to say, “We’re going to my sister’s house. We’re so excited to see the family and see the cousins. Papa will be there. We’re excited for the BBQ, and we’re excited to go get into some water and do some fun 4th of July celebrations.”
They also told us a little about their experience getting to the airport: “It was busy driving here to the airport. We got through the lines pretty quick, and so now we just have to make that flight.”
Reno-Tahoe International Airport prepares for busy holiday weekend
Reno-Tahoe International Airport says they’re expecting 16,000 travelers today. A spokesperson says to arrive at least two hours before your boarding time and prepare for limited parking. A couple of people who travel often shared their advice when it comes to flying on busy holiday weekends like this one. “Definitely get TSA Pre-Check. It’ll save a lot of time and then try not to do layovers,” one traveler says.
Airport spokesperson April Conway says one of the most common mistakes people make when traveling is not arriving early enough: “A lot of people who lived in Reno a long time remember the days when you could drop your stuff off and head to the gate ten minutes before boarding and you would always make it. We don’t want people to leave that to chance.”
Conway says to make sure to arrive at least two hours before your boarding time and prepare for limited parking.
“If you can, get a ride from somebody. Use our parking reservation system that’s available on our website. That will ensure you have a spot waiting for you when you arrive.”
She tells us the airport also offers an online five-dollar coupon for rideshares like Uber and Lyft.
With so many people passing through, Conway says to plan everything ahead to ensure a smooth process for not just you, but also the airport workers.
“Make sure that you understand what your airline rules are for your baggage, understand if you have a Real ID, or if you don’t what that might mean for your passenger experience through security.”
A couple of people who travel often shared their advice when it comes to flying on busy holiday weekends like this one.
Don Primosch, traveling from Phoenix, Arizona, says, “There’s been times where I packed so much stuff, and I didn’t use three-quarters of it. So, pack light and drink a lot of water.”
Nick Bibb, also from Phoenix, says, “Definitely get TSA Pre-Check. It’ll save a lot of time and then try not to do layovers; it just wastes time.”
Primosch adds, “You don’t have to take off your shoes, you don’t have to take off your belt. I went Pre-Check today, this morning, and it was a breeze.”
And some good news, as the airport rebuilds its new concourses, Conway says passengers should not be impacted by construction.
