MLB announced on Monday that St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado has dethroned Athletics rookie centerfielder Denzel Clarke as this week’s winner.
Arenado claimed the honor for his bare-handed game-ending play against the Chicago Cubs on June 24.
With two outs in the top of the ninth inning of an 8-7 game, and the game-tying run on third base, the Cubs’ Danbsy Swanson hit a high chopper to third base. Arenado, a 10-time gold glove winner, charged the ball and made a barehanded play, throwing out Swanson at first base to preserve the crucial victory for the Cardinals.
“I didn’t expect us to be winning like this, at this point,” Arenado told MLB.com after the game. “I expected us to play hard, I thought we were going to be good defensively and I thought our pitching would be fine. … Just seeing everyone one-through-nine contributing, I mean I like playing baseball like this … against the Cubs … where games matter.

“As you get older, that’s what you want. You don’t want to play games just to play games. Individually, I’ve accomplished some things in this game and I want to accomplish something team-oriented and special and win a World Series. Games like this, it’s easy to wake up for. This is the most excited [that] I’ve come to the ballpark for – this series – in about two years.”
Arenado’s Electric Play of the Week win breaks the record streak set by Clarke, who won four weeks in a row. Nolan Arenado has been scratched from the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting lineup with a right shoulder impingement. The future Hall of Famer had been dealing with a finger injury earlier this week. There is no news yet on whether the Cardinals expect his status to be anything worse than day-to-day. The Cardinals lost 11-3 to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, giving up eight home runs.
Prior to Saturday afternoon’s matchup with the Chicago Cubs, the Cardinals announced that Nolan Arenado had been scratched from their starting lineup with a right shoulder impingement. There is no news yet on whether the Cardinals expect his status to be anything worse than day-to-day.

After an embarrassing loss yesterday where the Cardinals gave up eight home runs to the Cubs, the Cardinals need a major bounce-back from their entire team on Saturday, and missing Arenado sure does not help.
The Cardinals giving up 11 runs on eight home runs was already a horrible outing, but the club’s offense was mostly quiet throughout the game, as they only scored one run off a pitcher off a solo home run from Brendan Donovan before racking up two runs off of a position player in the ninth inning to make the final score 11-3.
With opener Drew Pomeranz on the mound today, a lefty, the Cardinals’ offensive woes could continue. Pomeranz won’t go deep into the game, but lefties have shut down the Cardinals all year long, and the club failed to score a single run against the Pittsburgh Pirates in their series before this matchup with Chicago.
Arenado’s finger injury came back in the Guardians series this past weekend, and while he’s unsure of how it occurred, it was still bothering him this week. We have not heard yet as to the cause of Arenado’s shoulder injury, but we will update that as well as the timetable as information is provided.

Willson Contreras stepped to the plate to lead off the fourth inning of a game between the Cardinals and Pirates on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. With Pirates’ ace Paul Skenes on the mound and the count at 2-2, the Cardinals’ first baseman was drilled in the hand by a 99 mph fastball.

After a lengthy conversation at first base with manager Oli Marmol and athletic trainer Adam Olsen, Contreras remained in the game. Just a few minutes later, though, he was thrown out at home plate to end the half inning.
Contreras was then pulled from the game and taken back for X-rays. As a result, Garrett Hampson entered to play right field, and Alec Burleson took over at first base.

Luckily for the Cardinals, the X-rays on Contreras’s left hand came back negative. Team officials announced that he is just dealing with bruising and will be considered day to day.
The Cardinals have a day game in Pittsburgh tomorrow, followed by an off day on Thursday. St. Louis will travel to Chicago for a three-game series with the Cubs this weekend.

With the hit-by-pitch tonight, Contreras is now tied for the league lead, as he’s been hit 14 times this year. He was hit in the hand just last Thursday in the ninth inning of a game against the Cubs.
The Cardinals can’t afford to lose Contreras for an extended period of time, as they are already without fellow right-handed hitters Iván Herrera and Nolan Arenado, who is listed as day to day with a hand injury of his own.
