COLUMBUS, Ohio — Figuring out where to even begin when it comes to investing or planning for the future can be a daunting task. A group of central Ohio teens are trying to break down that barrier by helping improve financial literacy through a podcast.
What started as a pandemic-era fascination with the markets and money turned into a weekly production online to break down what’s happening in the money world and translate financial concepts to make them understandable for everyone.
The Real Returns Show was initially started by Drona Gaddam when he was in sixth grade at Columbus Academy. As he’s gotten older, the program evolved into what it is today with the help of four of his friends.
“I think it’s all about not getting almost like intimidated by whatever complex words or things that you’ll see in the news,” Gaddam said. “People will try to make things more complex than they seem.”
Gaddam, now a student at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, recognizes the challenges people face in trying to make heads or tails of financial news.
“Our mission is to translate. Translate is the word that we use. Translate the events that are happening in Washington and New York for the everyday person,” he said. “Our show is also a joint learning journey. We’re learning the same amount our listeners are learning.”
The teens are mostly self-taught, but Gaddam brings in the movers and shakers of the financial world like Jeff Kreisler, a managing director at the J.P. Morgan Private Advisory leadership team, to talk about complex topics and how it could affect people’s financial situations and future.
