Peralta (11-4) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Jacob Young, Washington’s No. 9 hitter, slapped a hit through the infield between third and short. The 29-year-old right-hander got the first four Nationals to open the game and rebounded after Turang’s two-base fielding error on Luis García Jr.’s grounder in the second inning by retiring the next 12 batters.
Peralta, who allowed three hits and a walk and struck out seven, left the game following Daylen Lile’s run-scoring single with two out in the seventh. The Brewers climbed to a season-best 16 games above .500 at 56-40.

Rooker hits 2-run HR, Miller strikes out 2 with runner on 2nd in 9th as Athletics beat Blue Jays 4-3
Athletics’ Brent Rooker hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning. Mason Miller struck out Ernie Clement and George Springer looking with the tying run on second in the ninth. Toronto lost for the second time in its last 13 games. A lawyer for the maker of the video game Call of Duty argued Friday that a judge should dismiss a lawsuit brought by families of the victims of the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting. The families sued Call of duty maker Activision and Meta Platforms, which owns Instagram, saying that the companies bear responsibility for promoting products used by the teen gunman in the school shooting last year. The lawsuit was filed last year on the second anniversary of one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history, when a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers and shot two teachers in the fourth-grade classroom. The case has little chance of prevailing, because courts have repeatedly held that “creators of artistic works, whether they be video games, books, movies, or TV, cannot be held legally liable for the acts of their audience,” attorney Bethany Kristovich said.

The Blue Jays had won the first five meetings by a 46-24 margin, scoring at least eight runs in each game.
Newcomb entered with one out and a runner on third in the eighth with the A’s up a run. He struck out Addison Barger swinging after falling behind 3-0 and then fanned Jiménez on a 3-2 pitch.
Toronto lost for the second time in its last 13 games.
Gausman surrendered four runs and five hits with two walks in five innings.
Lopez allowed two runs and four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in five innings. Elvis Alvarado struck out four in a row in 1 2/3 innings and left after a bloop double by Clement with two outs in the seventh. Kelly and Sean Newcomb each got two outs and Miller pitched the ninth for his 18th save.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked leading off the eighth against Michael Kelly and scored on Alejandro Kirk’s sacrifice fly to cut it to 4-3.
Rooker had an RBI double off Kevin Gausman (6-7) in the third inning to tie it 2-all after Lawrence Butler’s single drove in the first run. Rooker hit his 20th home run two innings later after Nick Kurtz’s two-out single for a 4-2 lead.
Rookie Leo Jiménez hit his first home run — a two-out solo shot off Jacob Lopez (3-5) to put the Blue Jays up 1-0 in the second. Ernie Clement doubled leading off the third and scored on a two-out double by Bo Bichette for a 2-0 lead.
Miller walked pinch hitter Joey Loperfido leading off the ninth and Nathan Lukes bunted him to second. Miller struck Clement with a 103.3 mph fastball and Springer on a slider after topping 102 on his two previous pitches — both strikes.
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Brent Rooker hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning and Mason Miller struck out Ernie Clement and George Springer looking with the tying run on second in the ninth inning as the Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 on Saturday night.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A lawyer for the maker of the video game Call of Duty argued Friday that a judge should dismiss a lawsuit brought by families of the victims of the Robb Elementary School attack in Uvalde, Texas, saying the contents of the war game are protected by the First Amendment.
The families sued Call of Duty maker Activision and Meta Platforms, which owns Instagram, saying that the companies bear responsibility for promoting products used by the teen gunman.
Three sets of parents who lost children in the shooting were in the audience at the Los Angeles hearing.
Activision lawyer Bethany Kristovich told Superior Court Judge William Highberger that the “First Amendment bars their claims, period full stop.”
“The issues of gun violence are incredibly difficult,” Kristovich said. “The evidence in this case is not.”
She argued that the case has little chance of prevailing if it continues, because courts have repeatedly held that “creators of artistic works, whether they be books, music, movies, TV or video games, cannot be held legally liable for the acts of their audience.”
The lawsuit, one of many involving Uvalde families, was filed last year on the second anniversary of one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. The gunman killed 19 students and two teachers. Officers finally confronted and shot him after waiting more than an hour to enter the fourth-grade classroom.
At the hearing, another attorney for the families argued that Call of Duty exceeds its First Amendment protections by moving into marketing.
“The basis of our complaint is not the existence of Call of Duty,” Katie Mesner-Hage told the judge. “It is using Call of Duty as a platform to market weapons to minors.”
The plaintiffs’ lawyers showed contracts and correspondence between executives at Activison and gunmakers whose products, they said, are clearly and exactly depicted in the game despite brand names not appearing.
Mesner-Hage said the documents show that they actually prefer being unlabeled because “It helps shield them from the implication that they are marketing guns to minors,” while knowing that players will still identify and seek out the weapons.
Kristovich said there is no evidence that the kind of product placement and marketing the plaintiffs are talking about happened in any of the editions of the game the shooter played.
The families have also filed a lawsuit against Daniel Defense, which manufactured the AR-style rifle used in the May 24, 2022, shooting.
Koskoff, a Connecticut lawyer, also represented families of nine Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims in a lawsuit against gunmaker Remington and got a $73 million lawsuit settlement.
He invoked Sandy Hook several times in his arguments, saying the shooters there and in Uvalde shared the same gaming obsession.
Koskoff said the Uvalde shooter experienced “the absorption and the loss of self in Call of Duty.”
He said that immersion was so deep that the shooter searched online for how to obtain an armored suit that he didn’t know only exists in the game.
Koskoff played a clip from Call of Duty Modern Warfare, the game the shooter played, with a first-person shooter gunning down opponents.
The shots echoed loudly in the courtroom, and several people in the audience slowly shook their heads.
“Call of Duty is in a class of its own,” Koskoff said.
Kristovich argued for Activision that the game, despite its vast numbers of players, can be tied to only a few of the many U.S. mass shootings.
“The game is incredibly common. It appears in a scene on ‘The Office,’” she said. She added that it is ridiculous to assert that “this is such a horrible scourge that your honor has to essentially ban it through this lawsuit.”
Highberger told the lawyers he was not leaning in either direction before the hearing. He gave no time frame for when he will rule, but a quick decision is not expected.
The judge did tell the plaintiffs’ lawyers that their description of Activision’s actions seemed like deliberate malfeasance, where their lawsuit alleges negligence. He said that was the biggest hurdle they needed to clear.
“Their conduct created a risk of exactly what happened,” Mesner-Hage told him. “And we represent the people who are exactly the foreseeable victims of that conduct.”
Meta’s attorneys will make arguments on a similar motion next month.

Red Sox turn to new trade addition for save: ‘We trust the kid and he’s a good one’
Red Sox manager Alex Cora chose to deploy Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning against a certain part of Washington’s lineup. This time, it was newcomer Jordan Hicks who closed out a 6-4 win. Hicks walked Brady House, then after a wild pitch, allowed a two-out RBI single to Daylen Lile. CJ Abrams, representing the tying run, flied out to left to end the game. The Red Sox improved to 46-45 with their third straight win. It was just Hicks’ second save in the last two seasons, his other one came on August 19 of last season.
As he has done at different points this season, manager Alex Cora chose to deploy Chapman in the eighth inning against a certain part of Washington’s lineup and go elsewhere for the save. This time, it was newcomer Jordan Hicks — making his third appearance since coming over in the Rafael Devers blockbuster — who closed out a 6-4 win.

“We’re going to use him in high-leverage situations,” Cora said. “We’ve done it three times already. We trust the kid and he’s a good one.”
With the Red Sox leading, 5-3, after Washington closed the gap in a wild seventh inning from Justin Wilson and Greg Weissert, Cora chose to go to Chapman with the Nationals’ best hitter, James Wood, due up to lead off the eighth. Wood singled, but Chapman battled back to retire the side — and strike out two hitters — on just 13 pitches. By the time the baton was passed to Hicks, the Red Sox led by three runs thanks to an insurance homer by Ceddanne Rafaela.
Wood was just 1-for-10 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch in three games against Boston but has been one of baseball’s breakout stars this year, hitting .288 with 23 homers, 67 RBIs and a .940 OPS in 90 games. The left-handed Wood entered Sunday with a pristine .911 OPS against southpaw pitchers but the Red Sox still felt Chapman was a better matchup with Wood and first baseman Nathaniel Lowe due up in the eighth.
Hicks walked Brady House with one out, then after a wild pitch, allowed a two-out RBI single to Daylen Lile that made it a two-run game. CJ Abrams, representing the tying run, flied out to left to end the game.

It was just Hicks’ second save in the last two seasons. His other one came on August 19 of last season when the Giants beat the White Sox.
“I love the confidence,” Hicks said. “I know I’m capable so just seeing the belief in me, that’s all I could ask for, really.”
The Red Sox improved to 46-45 with their third straight win.
“It’s a great team sweep,” Hicks said. “Just to be able to come in after Aroldis and get the job done, that’s all I can ask for being on a new team.”
