CM Majhi announces integration of yoga in school curriculum

Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi Saturday announced that yoga will be integrated into school curriculum and public health programmes to promote physical and mental well-being. Majhi said yoga is not just a form of physical exercise, but a holistic discipline that unites the body, mind, and soul. This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” highlights the connection between individual wellness and health of the planet. The 11th International Yoga Day was also celebrated at the Biju Patnaik International Airport, where officials from various agencies participated under the leadership of its director, Prasanna Pradhan.

“We are planning to make yoga accessible to everyone. Through schools, colleges, hostels, and sports centres, we are organising workshops and creating awareness. Our goal is to build a healthy, self-reliant, skilled, and empowered Odisha,” said Majhi at the state-level celebration of 11th International Yoga Day at Kalinga Stadium here.

Addressing a gathering of nearly 15,000 participants, including ministers, MPs, MLAs, senior officials, and public, Majhi said yoga is not just a form of physical exercise, but a holistic discipline that unites the body, mind, and soul.

“Although it originated from Indian culture and yogic traditions, it is not tied to any specific religion. Yoga, is embraced today by people of all races, religions, and castes,” he said.

This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” highlights the connection between individual wellness and health of the planet.

Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati participated in a yoga session at the Raj Bhavan. Participants performed various yoga postures and breathing exercises.

He said yoga is more than just a physical activity. “It is a profound way of life that nurtures inner peace, resilience, and self-awareness. Rooted in ancient Indian wisdom, yoga brings harmony to the body, mind, and spirit, while strengthening our connection with nature,” he said.

Simultaneous yoga sessions were conducted in all districts drawing massive participation. A traditional Gotipua dance performance was also showcased at the Bhubaneswar event.

Union minister Jual Oram, deputy CM Pravati Parida, and Puri MP Sambit Patra performed yoga on the premises of Sun Temple, Konark, on Saturday. Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan participated in yoga sessions on Samaleswari Temple premises and on the banks of the Mahanadi in Sambalpur.

The 11th International Yoga Day was also celebrated at the Biju Patnaik International Airport, where officials from various agencies participated under the leadership of its director, Prasanna Pradhan.

A special yoga session was organised to mark International Yoga Day at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. “AIIMS Bhubaneswar has been exploring the therapeutic potential of yoga across various medical disciplines,” said Dr Ashutosh Biswas, executive director.

Among others, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) district headquarters, Odisha, and other ICG units at Paradip organised yoga sessions with NCC cadets, fishing communities, CISF jawans, and school and college students. NCC cadets from educational institutions in and around Cuttack also practised yoga at Silver City Boat Club.
