Education minister Bratya Basu condemned the incident on Friday and instructed the dept to speak to college authorities. Sources said an official from the higher education department called the vice principal, Nayna Chatterjee, who is now the teacher-in-charge of the college, and asked her about the incident. According to sources, Chatterjee said she had no knowledge about the incident. She was instructed to call an emergency governing body meeting to discuss the matter and probe why such a heinous incident occurred on campus when the college should have been locked.

An official said, “The governing body should meet to examine why such an incident happened and where they had lapses. Then they must send us a detailed report and what advisory should be issued for students’ safety.” Chatterjee said on Friday that they were aware that some students remained on the campus after class hours, but they failed to make them leave and lock the gate on time. When TOI called her several times on Saturday to inquire about the measures, she answered once, saying she was busy informing members about the meeting.
