India’s active Covid-19 caseload rose to 3,961 on Monday, June 2, with several states witnessing a mild but steady increase in daily infections.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) confirmed 203 new cases and four deaths in the past 24 hours, while officials stated that most infections remain mild.

Kerala: Highest active caseload, one death reported

Kerala continues to top the chart with 1,435 active cases, despite only 35 new cases being reported in the past 24 hours. A 24-year-old woman with multiple comorbidities, including decompensated chronic liver disease, succumbed to the virus. Since January 1, the state has recorded seven Covid-19-related deaths, the joint highest in the country.

Delhi: Surge in infections, fourth fatality in current wave

Delhi recorded 47 new cases on Sunday, the highest single-day rise across India, pushing the capital’s active caseload to 483. A 22-year-old woman with a pre-existing lung condition died, marking the fourth Covid-related fatality in Delhi during the ongoing wave.

Last week, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assured citizens that the situation was under control, with most patients recovering at home and only 19 requiring hospitalisation. An advisory was issued to hospitals to ensure bed and oxygen availability.

Maharashtra: Moderate rise, one death reported

Maharashtra added 21 new cases, with its total active infections standing at 506. District-wise, Pune recorded the most with 31 cases, followed by Mumbai (22), Thane (9), Kolhapur (2), and Nagpur (1). A 44-year-old man died due to Covid-19 complications. The state has also logged seven deaths since January 1, sharing the highest toll with Kerala.

West Bengal: Second-highest daily rise, surging active cases

West Bengal saw a spike of 44 new infections, taking its active case count to 331. No fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours. However, concerns persist as the state has not updated all its data publicly. Six patients were discharged after testing negative.

Gujarat: Steady Rise in Cases

Gujarat has 338 active cases, ranking fifth among the worst-affected states. However, the state reported no new fatalities in the last 24 hours. The overall trend remains stable, though monitoring continues.

Karnataka: One death, advisory issued

Karnataka reported one Covid-related death, involving a 63-year-old man with comorbid conditions including pulmonary TB and cancer. The state has recorded four deaths this year. The government has advised citizens to wear masks in crowded areas, maintain hygiene, and follow distancing protocols.

Odisha: Mild symptoms, no severe cases reported

Odisha’s active Covid cases have risen to 12, according to Director of Public Health Dr. Nilakantha Mishra. All patients are reported to have mild symptoms and are under home isolation.

Andhra Pradesh: Public alert issued

The state government urged the public to remain vigilant. Information and Public Relations Minister K Parthasarathi recommended avoiding crowds and following Covid-appropriate behaviour in high-traffic areas like bus stands and airports.

Punjab: Six active cases, one fatality

Punjab has six active cases, five of which are from Ludhiana. One person has died, and two of the deceased’s children, though asymptomatic, tested positive and are in quarantine.

Haryana (Gurugram): Spike after two years

Gurugram reported four new cases on Sunday, taking the district’s active total to 12. Civil Surgeon Dr. Alka Singh urged residents to test for flu-like symptoms. This is the region’s first notable surge in over two years.

So far, India has recorded 28 Covid-19-related deaths in 2025.

According to ICMR Director General Dr. Rajiv Bahl, genome sequencing has identified four Omicron subvariants, LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1, as the dominant strains in circulation. These variants are not associated with increased severity.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely but have reiterated that most patients exhibit mild symptoms, and hospitalisation remains limited.
