Last week, ECW icon Rob Van Dam spoke out against celebrities coming into the wrestling business. Now, WWE Superstar Damian Priest has taken the other side of the argument while guesting on Busted Open, supporting entertainers who want to prove their worth inside the ring.

“Before I was in WWE, like most fans, I was like, ‘They’re taking away time from from the Superstars. They’re taking away spots. We don’t want to see that, we want our wrestlers,’” Priest began. “Celebrities now… they’re not just coming in to promote a song or an album or a movie, they’re actually putting in the time.”

The former heavyweight champ continued, “Jelly Roll is doing exactly what [Bad] Bunny did. They moved to Florida to be at the [WWE Performance Center] full time because he’s taking this seriously. On our side, you start realizing and appreciating Bunny, Jelly Roll and guys like that. When they’re on a show and advertised, the extra eyeballs get to see me… I’m not even in that match but I’m going to get extra eyeballs on me and I’m creating a new fan. Maybe that person will now, in turn, like me because of what they saw and I have another follower… a follower for the business and a follower for personal gain. You can’t lose, it’s good for everyone.”

Priest wasn’t responding to RVD’s claims, but he touched further on one of the same topics Van Dam did — celebrities taking a spot on a big card that otherwise would’ve gone to a pro wrestler.

“I don’t believe in taking up spots,” Priest said. “We’re all in in control of our own situation within the company right? Obviously, within reason. To me it’s like, we’re there, we got the job and it’s on us to just maintain staying on TV or whatever. So I don’t believe in taking up a spot. I believe in, ‘You did something in your life to deserve this moment right now that’s how you got here, because of whatever you did in your life.’ I definitely appreciate what it brings to our business now.”

10 Wrestlers Who Landed Roles in Superhero Movies Who on earth didn’t mark out when Macho Man Randy Savage suddenly appeared as the badass ‘Bonesaw’ in Spiderman? “Bonesaw is ready!!!”

Superhero movies were practically built for wrestling’s most legendary performers. It’s true that Hulk Hogan was unable to translate his explosive in-ring success into box office gold, but performers like Jesse Ventura and Rowdy Roddy Piper did prove that wrestlers could carry major roles in action films like Predator and They Live!

At the turn of the millennium, as the Marvel and DC Universes birthed some of the most profitable film franchises of all time, wrestlers like Dave Bautista and The Rock would nab starring roles as some of cinema’s most powerful heroes. In turn, long forgotten pro wrestlers would experience career rejuvenations thanks to their god-given size and ability to connect with an audience.

Whether it be ‘Drax’ in the multi-billion dollar franchise Guardians of the Galaxy or ‘Claw’ in a Hong Kong superhero sequel you’ve probably never heard of, we’re still popping whenever a WWE favorite makes an appearance on the silver screen.
