Five people sleeping on a footpath in South Delhi’s Vasant Vihar were run over by a speeding Audi car late Saturday night. The driver, identified as 40-year-old Utsav Shekhar, has been arrested. Delhi Police on Sunday released a photo of the accused driver in a hit-and-run case. The victims were all residents of Rajasthan and had been sleeping on the footpath when the car ran over them. Delhi cop said Shekhar, a resident of Dwarka involved in property dealings, was driving the vehicle while returning from Noida. He was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The victims—identified as Ladhi (40), Bimla (8), Sabami (45), Narayani (35), and Ramchander (45)—were all residents of Rajasthan and had been sleeping on the footpath when the car ran over them.
Victims says, ‘sleeping on footpath for many years’
Narayani, one of the injured, described the traumatic moment from her hospital bed. “The car ran over us… Me, my husband and children got injured. I got unconscious after being run over and sustained injuries on the chest and neck… We have been sleeping here (on the footpath) for many years…” she told news agency ANI.

Ramchander, another injured victim, demanded strict action from the authorities, sayion, “We were sleeping when the car hit us at around 1 AM… Two people were injured, but then my wife’s ear was also injured, and her rib was broken… The police took us to the hospital… There should be action against the driver.”
According to a police statement: “On dated 09.07.2025 at 01:45 AM, a PCR call vide DD No.3A regarding accident near Indian Petrol Pump, in front of Shiva Camp, Vasant Vihar was received at PS Vasant Vihar. On reaching the spot, it came to notice that injured persons have been shifted to hospitals. All were sleeping on footpath.”
Authorities said the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Further investigation is underway, and the police are also probing whether Shekhar was overspeeding or driving under the influence, as reported.

Meanwhile, Delhi police released a photo of the accused driver, Utsav Shekhar, who was allegedly behind the wheel at the time of the accident and arrested him.
The incident took place on Wednesday, when a Audi car drove over the footpath near Indian Oil Petrol Pump and crushed the people sleeping there. Delhi police received a PCR call at 1:45 am, regarding the incident in front of Shiva Camp. Upon reaching the spot, it came to notice that injured persons have been shifted to hospitals.
Five people were injured including an 8-year-old child named Bimla. Police also said that the driver who has been identified as Utsav Shekhar is a resident of Dwarka and deals in property-related work. Shekhar was returning home from Noida when the accident happened.
According to the police, statements of eyewitness were recorded, which pointed to a white color Audi Car. The driver of the vehicle was apprehended and legal action taken.

They were rushed to the hospital.
In a statement, the Delhi police said, “On dated 09.07.2025 at 01:45 AM, a PCR call vide DD No.3A regarding accident near Indian Petrol Pump, infront of Shiva Camp, Vasant Vihar was received at PS Vasant Vihar. On reaching the spot, it came to notice that injured persons have been shifted to hospitals. All were sleeping on footpath.”. They added that “Statements of eyewitnesses were recorded, wherein they stated that a white colour Audi Car ran over the above-mentioned persons while they were sleeping on the footpath. The driver of the offending vehicle, namely Utsav Shekhar resident of Dwarka, age 40 yrs, was apprehended and legal action taken.”

The driver of the car, identified as Utsav Shekhar, a resident of Dwarka, has also been arrested. The victims have been identified as Ladhi, Bimla, Sabami, Narayani and Ramchander.

The police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the hospital. The driver of the car, identified as Utsav Shekhar, a resident of Dwarka, has also been arrested.

“People sleeping on the footpath, near the Indian Oil Petrol Pump, in front of Shiva Camp, Vasant Vihar, were crushed by an Audi car. The incident took place on 09 July 2025, at around 01:45 am. Delhi Police received the news through a PCR call. Police from the Vasant Vihar police station reached the spot, and the four injured were sent to the hospital. The driver has been arrested,” the Delhi Police said.
One of the victims, Ramchander, said, “We were sleeping when the car hit us at around 1 AM. Two people were injured; my wife sustained an injury to her ear, and her rib was broken. The police took us to the hospital.”
He also demanded action against the driver, who was allegedly driving the car in an inebriated condition.
As per the initial police investigation, the white Audi car ran over the victims, who were sleeping on the footpath. Soon after the accident, the police reached the spot and arrested the driver. His medical report has reportedly confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol.
