Department of Public Health marks one-year anniversary
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is celebrating its one-year anniversary as an agency on July 1. Highlights from DPH’s first year include: South Carolina reaching its highest national health ranking in 35 years, moving up to 37th place. A decline in overdose deaths, as shown in the latest Drug Overdose Deaths Report — the first drop in over a decade. The release of the state’s first-ever Childhood Cancer Report, based on 25 years of data.
“Our first year of DPH was packed with wins worth celebrating, challenges worth remembering, and, like a thread through it all, our vision of healthy people living in healthy communities,” said Dr. Edward Simmer, interim DPH director. “Of course, none of this would have happened without our dedicated team of amazing people who come to work every day focused on making the lives of South Carolinians healthier and better.”

Strong emergency response efforts during and after Hurricane Helene
A “topping-out” ceremony for the future Public Health Lab, marking completion of its structural framework
Launch of the Respiratory Disease Dashboard, providing up-to-date data on COVID-19, RSV, and flu
Throughout the year, DPH continued to serve communities statewide with trainings, health screenings, clinics, inspections, home visits, events, and more — working in every county to help improve health outcomes for all South Carolinians.
DPH also launched a new video series featuring quick, 60-second clips introducing the agency’s staff, services, and partners. The first episode highlights the SNAP-Ed program, which promotes healthy eating, physical activity, and community wellness.
“Our one-year anniversary is an exciting milestone to reflect on the successes we’ve experienced so far, but it also provides us with an opportunity to look ahead as an agency,” said Simmer. “There is always more that can be done to improve the health of everyone living in our state, and our staff will continue to work diligently to improve and expand upon our programs to meet the unique needs of our communities as we move forward.”
