Today, ahead of their matchup against the Kansas City Royals, the Diamondbacks announced Carroll will be activated, with infielder Tim Tawa optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding roster move.
Before the injury, Carroll was enjoying another tremendous year. In 72 games, he’d already launched 20 home runs—well on his way to passing his 2023 career high of 25—and his .914 OPS this year would also mark a new career best.
The Diamondbacks are 43–45, sitting fourth in the NL West and 4.5 games back of a wild-card spot. With Arizona in the midst of a three-game losing streak, Carroll will need to return to form immediately if the club hopes to contend for October baseball.

Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll returning from IL vs. Royals
The Arizona Diamondbacks are four and a half games out of the last NL Wild Card spot. Outfielder Corbin Carroll is set to come off the injured list before Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. GM Mike Hazen will have to make some moves to get the team back into the hunt for a playoff spot. If reinforcements do arrive, don’t be surprised to see the Snakes make a deep run in October. The 2023 World Series run still linger among the shadows of Chase Field.

“Right fielder Corbin Carroll returns off the IL for the Arizona Diamondbacks today, one day before the All-Star teams are announced,” posted Nightengale on the social media platform.
Getting Carroll back is a big boon to the roster. Although manager Torey Lovullo’s squad is filled with talent, injuries have hit them quite hard. Particularly with the pitching staff. The team is in a lot better shape offensively at the moment, particularly with their best offensive weapon returning from the IL. Now, the question becomes this: will GM Mike Hazen decide to make some moves that supplement this current team? Or will he sell and live to fight another day?
Can Corbin Carroll help Diamondbacks get back into playoff hunt?
It really could go either way. The Diamondbacks’ best hope at a playoff spot is via a Wild Card slot. They likely won’t be able to catch up to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the top of the NL West. Second place is possible, as the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants are within a game of each other for that spot currently. With the right moves, it’s possible Arizona leapfrogs over both teams. However, that means Hazen will have to make some moves.
If Carroll and the D-Backs can go into the All-Star Break on a hot streak, that might give Hazen all he needs to make some moves. Particularly with the bullpen, where top relievers Justin Martinez and A.J Puk are out with injuries. If reinforcements do arrive, don’t be surprised to see the Snakes once again make a deep run in October. Shades of the 2023 World Series run still linger among the shadows of Chase Field, ready to be reignited.

The Diamondbacks additionally optioned utility player Tim Tawa to Triple-A Reno for the roster spot.
Arizona’s starting lineup is nearly whole again, just missing catcher Gabriel Moreno, who is on the IL with a fractured finger.
Carroll fought to get back as quickly as he could, fielding and base running at Chase Field before he could swing a bat. He started to take swings this past week, working up to hitting in the cages. He asked to play in an Arizona Complex League game on Thursday, getting back in live action before the team anticipated.
He then took live batting practice reps on Friday against reliever Kendall Graveman.
“The function came back in terms of the bat speed was kind of what I was measuring there. First day, it was like ‘Oh no.’ And then yesterday was much better,” Carroll said pregame Saturday. “Just kind of got to a spot where it was good to go.”
Carroll suffered a chip fracture in Toronto, and his return has been predicated on his pain tolerance. The club has claimed he would not risk injuring his wrist further by returning.
“It’s not really painful anymore though, so it’s not really an issue,” Carroll said. “Not something that’s gonna get worse.”
Manager Torey Lovullo said on Friday that he asked Carroll how much pain he felt hitting, and Carroll said not much at that point. Lovullo described a bee sting feeling Carroll experienced when he first started taking swings, but that feeling subsided as the week progressed.
He added Saturday his comfort level grew once the medical staff informed him Carroll couldn’t further injure the wrist, despite the chip fracture still being present.
Carroll owns a .914 OPS this season with 20 home runs and a league-leading nine triples. He held a 1.099 OPS through 14 games in June before going down with injury.
All-Star Game reserves will be announced on Sunday, and he has made a case to make the team this season.
Diamondbacks option Tim Tawa
The Diamondbacks will keep their three left-handed outfielders in Carroll, Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas on the roster, which is how they started the season.
Corbin Carroll was “coming quick” through his rigorous rehab process and will bring a “much-needed boost” to the lineup, Torey Lovullo said. The manager is hopeful a return to Triple-A will mean Tim Tawa regains his confidence. pic.twitter.com/i9tNyRCAir — Arizona Sports (@AZSports) July 5, 2025
They recalled McCarthy when Carroll went down, and McCarthy played well in his second MLB opportunity of the season. He hit .267 with an .824 OPS in eight games, smacking two home runs.
Optioning Tawa leaves the D-backs with less infield depth for the time being.
