Audrey Watson Duncan’s culinary journey began in the 1970s as a young girl helping her mother in the kitchen. “I started as a little girl with my mom,” Ms. Audrey recalls. “We used the top of the washing machine and put our board on top, and I would chop seasonings and work beside my mother to help her prepare the dishes she had to prepare.”

The skills she learned and the deep love for cooking she developed during these early years have since blossomed into a thriving career, culminating in the establishment of Ms. Audrey’s Southern Kitchen & Catering, located in the heart of the Gaston Point community in Gulfport, Mississippi.

A Tribute to Her Mother’s Legacy

Ms. Audrey’s connection to cooking is deeply personal. Her mother passed away at the age of 52 due to breast cancer. “Being in the kitchen with her, she would always tell me if I can do this for these people, I can be doing this for myself,” Ms. Audrey shares. Her mother’s words served as a guiding light, inspiring her to turn her passion for cooking into a profession.

Originally from Natchez, Ms. Audrey moved to Jackson after her mother’s passing, where she took on various roles, gradually climbing the professional ladder. Her journey eventually led her to the Gulf Coast in 1999.

Bringing True Southern Flavors to the Gulf Coast

Upon settling in the Gulf Coast, Ms. Audrey noticed a gap in the local cuisine offerings. “Everything I found was shrimp and fish, and I never could find true southern meals here,” she recalls. “I said, ‘Man if somebody could serve rice and gravy.’”

To fill this void, Ms. Audrey’s Southern Kitchen & Catering opened its doors in March 2015. Since then, it has become a haven for those seeking traditional southern-style meals—a source of comfort and nostalgia for many.

A Team Like Family

Running a successful restaurant is no small feat, but Ms. Audrey attributes a significant part of her success to her dedicated team. “I thank God I don’t have a lot of turnover, but most of my employees have been with me since day one,” she says. “Some even came from Jackson with me. And the people that I’ve met along the way, the customers? They’re not customers to me. They’re my family and I want them to always feel like that.”
