The American Cancer Society says most prostate cancers are found early through screening.
Dr. Adam Perlmutter with Saint Joseph Medical System says half of the battle is getting men in for a screening.
“It’s probably a good idea to go at least once a year. You know get your annual physical, establish a relationship with the doctor, and that really would build for a better future” says Perlmutter.
Dr. Perlmutter says there are few signs of prostate cancer until the prostate is enlarged.
That’s why early detection is key.
“So as the prostate gets bigger, they’ll start having issues urinating. Which is usually from benign causes, but those are usually the first signs of prostate problems per se not necessarily cancer, but you usually don’t see signs of prostate cancer until it’s advanced” says Perlmutter.
Perlmutter suggests that any man over 45 years old should get a baseline PSA test.
Anyone with a family history or at high risk should start around the age of 40.
“There is a genetic component to they say up to about 10% of prostate cancers. And then you know African-American men tend to get more aggressive forms of that cancer, so we have them start getting screened earlier” says Perlmutter.
Some prevention tips Dr. Perlmutter suggests include daily exercise and a balanced diet.
One of the biggest issues related to men’s health is scheduling time to see a doctor for routine check-ups.
Dr. Perlmutter says if you see something off, don’t wait, especially with your prostate.
“All the cancers that we see, if we catch them early, they’re curable” says Perlmutter.
