Downtown Laredo business owners voice concerns to city council
Business owners in downtown Laredo have once again expressed their concerns to the city council. The complaints stem from the Vacant Building Registration Notice, which imposes a fee on them for vacant properties, even if they are actively trying to lease them. The council agreed to table the issue for further discussion.
The complaints stem from the Vacant Building Registration Notice, which imposes a fee on them for vacant properties, even if they are actively trying to lease them.
Business owners believe that changes to the ordinance do not encourage investment or incentivize leasing, but rather punish them instead.
They are also concerned about some vague language used in the ordinance, arguing that a “minimum standard of care” could lead to violations for minor issues, which could cost business owners thousands.
According to downtown Laredo business owner Julian Rotnofsky, “If you’re facing $100,000 in mandated upgrades to do new standards of care and you still might not find a tenant, it starts looking a lot more practical to spend $20,000 to tear down the building.”
Director of Economic Development Miriam Castillo stated that they are holding meetings with board members and plan to reach out to property owners to potentially amend the ordinance. Additionally, the council agreed to table the issue for further discussion.
