He’s not even into his second season yet, and he wasn’t even a starter until Week 6 of his rookie year, but Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean is already considered at the top of his game by an ESPN analyst.

Bill Barnwell, a senior writer for the Worldwide Leader’s website who specializes in analytics, dubbed DeJean as the NFL’s No. 1 slot cornerback in his list of the league’s top “luxury players.”

Barnwell’s highly specified luxury positions include sixth offensive lineman, blitzing off-ball linebacker, blocking tight end, gadget player, and short-yardage running back among other under-appreciated roles in the league.

In giving the title of top slot corner to DeJean, who became the starter last year in Week 6, Barnwell notes the Eagles’ major improvement defensively – from subpar to No. 1 – after defensive coordinator Vic Fangio subbed in the rookie for Avonte Maddox as the nickelback. The second-round pick from Iowa played more than 80 percent of the defensive snaps from his first start until Week 17.

Wrote Barnwell:

After ranking 26th in expected points added (EPA) per play on defense before the bye, the Eagles were comfortably the league’s best defense by the same metric afterward – the second-place Texans ranked closer to 13th than they did to first… It would probably be unrealistic to suggest DeJean was the single driver of those improvements, but he certainly served as a revelation in the secondary. From Week 6 onward, his minus-22.7 EPA allowed as the nearest defender in coverage ranked second in the league, with fellow rookie standout Nate Wiggins the only cornerback ahead of him, per NFL Next Gen Stats. He didn’t allow a single touchdown on 68 targets. And while he didn’t record any interceptions during the regular season, you might remember what he did to Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl.

#GeoffMosherTake: While it’s a little premature to be called No. 1 at any position with just 16 games and 9 starts of experience, DeJean’s impact on Fangio’s defense can’t be understated. Could he already be the NFL’s best slot corner? Sure, but don’t dismiss some other nickelbacks who have also played at an extremely high level, including Trent McDuffie from the Chiefs and both Marlon Humphrey and Kyle Hamilton from the Ravens. Last year, Humphrey made his fourth Pro Bowl team and was first team All Pro for the second time in his career, playing 500 snaps in the slot, per PFF. McDuffie, who has two Super Bowl rings, made first-team All Pro in 2023 primarily as a slot corner (608 snaps) and made second team last year.

At the end of the Super Bowl, it was clear to all Philadelphia Eagles fans that cornerback Cooper DeJean was going to be special.

His pick-six in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs is one of the greatest moments in franchise history. It was his play in the postseason, though, that helped the NFL realize how much Eagles general manager Howie Roseman robbed the league of selecting DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The 2025 season has brought about new changes, with Darius Slay, James Bradberry, Avonte Maddox, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson all departing from the team in the secondary. This puts more pressure on Mitchell and DeJean to carry the cornerback position. All signs point towards them being able to handle it.

ESPN named DeJean the best slot cornerback in the NFL

He moved all around the backfield in college at Iowa, which should help his chances of handling the added responsibilities. A dominant rookie season also bodes well for his chances of being a great NFL cornerback regardless of where he lines up pre-snap.”

DeJean finished the 2024 season with 51 tackles, six pass deflections, three tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble in 16 games. His coverage skills were exceptional as he allowed a completion percentage of 66.2% and a passer rating of 80.1. He finished fourth in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.

His postseason play separated him from most of the rookies in the NFL. In four games, he made 18 tackles, four pass deflections, one fumble recovery, and one pick-six.

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio already has big plans for DeJean, as he could end up being more than just a slot cornerback. DeJean could be lining up at safety and outside corner, depending on the packages.

That kind of versatility will only enhance the legendary status DeJean is slowly building. Fangio wants guys on his defense to be able to play multiple different positions, and DeJean appears to be at the top of his list to do that.

The scary part about DeJean is he is only going to get better at 22. Imagine how good he is going to be in 2025 with more experience under his belt.

Through the first four weeks of the 2024 season, the Philadelphia Eagles fielded one of the worst pass defenses in the game.

All that changed after the bye week.

While some analysts will point to a more buttoned-up unit under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, one player’s arrival certainly changed the foundation of Philadelphia’s defense.

Cooper DeJean, the defensive back out of Iowa, missed most of training camp and the first month of the season due to a hamstring injury. The moment he arrived on the field in Philadelphia’s 20-16 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 6 (the first game after their bye week), he quickly became an integral part of Philly’s defense.

A few months later, not only is DeJean a Super Bowl champion/hero, but the league has begun to recognize him as the best in the league at his position.

Bill Barnwell of ESPN wrote a piece this week detailing DeJean’s prowess in the slot and how no cornerback can match the kind of impact he had on Philadelphia.

The crazy thing about NFL nomenclature over the last few decades is that even the most straightforward of things — what we call different position — has gone completely in flux.

Calling someone an outside linebacker means nothing. You’re an edge rusher. The fullback really doesn’t exist. Really smart guys and gals started calling tight ends “Y receivers” until the tight ends pushed back a bit.

That also means a player like Philadelphia Eagles star Cooper DeJean is not just a cornerback. Dejean, who is entering his second season, is a slot cornerback and, according to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, he’s also the NFL’s very best slot cornerback.

“DeJean spent the first month of his rookie season on the sideline, but after Philadelphia’s Week 5 bye, his move into the starting lineup coincided with a massive defensive improvement,” Barnwell wrote on June 19. “After ranking 26th in expected points added (EPA) per play on defense before the bye, the Eagles were comfortably the league’s best defense by the same metric afterward — the second-place Texans ranked closer to 13th than they did to first … DeJean will play outside more often in 2025, as he’ll likely start outside in their base defense and work out of the slot in sub packages.”

During the regular season, DeJean didn’t give up a touchdown on 68 targets and got his first career interception in a 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX – a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown on DeJean’s 22nd birthday and came off of 3-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Eagles Drafted 2 Cornerbacks to Kick Off 2024 Draft

The Eagles went after the secondary in the 2024 NFL draft, taking cornerbacks with their first 2 picks — players who seem like they could be foundational pieces for their defense for the next decade.

Philadelphia drafted Toledo’s Quinyon Mitchell in the first round (No. 22 overall) and watched him become a plug-and-play starter at outside cornerback — a player who could very well be a Pro Bowler and NFL All-Pro in 2025.

Then, the Eagles picked DeJean in the second round (No. 40 overall) out of Iowa, where he was a 2-time All-Big Ten pick and a unanimous All-American in 2023. In any other year, there’s no chance DeJean last until the second round — 2024 was an anomaly as it set the NFL record with offensive players going with the first 14 picks, including 6 quarterbacks.

DeJean Might Still Make Position Switch

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio suggested a possible position switch for DeJean when he spoke with the media at minicamp — Fangio’s first public remarks since winning the Super Bowl.

“And then in our base package, we’ll find a spot for him — either at corner or safety,” Fangio said on June 3.

Either way, don’t expect DeJean to come off the field much this season.

“… It means DeJean is likely to play all the snaps and no longer get subbed out as Fangio shows a commitment to getting his best personnel on the field at all times,” Philly Voice’s Geoff Mosher wrote on June 3. “It’s a tall order for DeJean, who’ll be moving around the defense depending on down and distance, although the majority of his snaps would still come at nickelback.”
