The order reinstates the national fitness assessment implemented in public schools from 1956 until 2013, NBC News reports. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be responsible for administering the test, which included children running and performing situps, pullups or pushups as well as a sit-and-reach test. The test later evolved into the Youth Fitness Program, which the government said “moved away from recognizing athletic performance to providing a barometer on student’s health.” Then-first lady Michelle Obama also promoted her “Let’s Move” initiative focused on reducing childhood obesity through diet and exercise.

A White House spokesperson said Trump’s revived Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition will create school-based programs to reward excellence in physical education.

“The Council will also play an important role in restoring tradition to college athletics, including reforming the broken transfer portal and keeping men out of women’s sports,” the spokesperson wrote.

Along with Barkley, other members of the council include NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, golf legend Jack Nicklaus, baseball legend Mariano Rivera, former Cowboys quarterback and NFL commentator Tony Romo, New York Giants legend Lawrence Taylor, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and WWE wrestler and chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque, who is also the son-in-law of Trump’s education secretary, Linda McMahon.

Back in April, Barkley visited Trump at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, before flying back to Washington, D.C., with the president on Marine One. The visit sparked backlash across social media despite Barkley never outwardly supporting Trump. Barkley later reacted to the criticism in a post on the social media platform X.

“lol some people are really upset cause I played golfed and flew to the White House with the PRESIDENT,” Barkley posted. “Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand. Just golfed with Obama not too long ago…and look forward to finishing my round with Trump ! Now ya get out my mentions with all this politics and have amazing day.” He closed out the post with a crying laughing emoji.

Barkley and other members of the Philadelphia Eagles later visited Trump at the White House in a ceremony celebrating their Super Bowl win. Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith were among the notable Eagles players who did not attend.
