Germany’s hospitality sector saw a noticeable uptick in turnover in April, driven by the late Easter holiday.

Price-adjusted revenues rose by 1.7% compared to March, according to Federal Statistical Office data on Friday.

The timing of the Easter holiday period – and the public holidays that accompany its – encouraged many people to take short vacations, benefiting the sector.

Hotels and other accommodation providers posted a strong month, with price-adjusted turnover up 4.5% compared to March. In the catering industry, revenues rose by 1.5%.

However, on a year-on-year basis, the sector saw a slight overall decline in turnover, down 1% compared to April 2024.

In 2024, the industry reported price-adjusted losses in turnover. Nominal increases were only achieved because prices for food, drinks and accommodation rose.

Looking ahead, the federal government plans to provide relief by permanently reducing VAT on restaurant food from 19% to 7%, starting January 1, 2026. However, it remains uncertain whether this tax cut will translate into lower menu prices for consumers.
