Election Commission of India announced the schedule for upcoming bye-elections to fill vacant Assembly seats in Gujarat, Kerala, Punjab, and West Bengal. Polling will take place on June 19, with the counting of votes scheduled for June 23. Only mobile phones will be permitted within 100 meters of the polling station, and they must remain switched off during that time. Electioneering shall not be allowed within a 100-meter radius around the Polling Station on the day of the poll.
The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the schedule for upcoming bye-elections to fill vacant Assembly seats in Gujarat, Kerala, Punjab, and West Bengal.
Further, in a move aimed at improving election day facilitation, the Commission has rationalised the permissible norms for canvassing in line with the electoral laws to 100 meters from the entrance of the polling station. However, electioneering shall not be allowed within a 100-meter radius around the Polling Station on the day of the poll, ANI reported.

Polling will take place on June 19, with the counting of votes scheduled for June 23. According to the poll body’s release, only mobile phones will be permitted within 100 meters of the polling station, and they must remain switched off during that time.
West Bengal
The bypolls will be held in West Bengal’s Kaliganj to fill the post of Nasiruddin Ahamed who passed away of a cardiac arrest in February this year. Earlier, on May 23, in line with various initiatives aimed at enhancing voter initiative and streamlining poll day arrangements, the Election Commission issued two more comprehensive instructions for providing mobile deposit facilities for voters outside polling stations and rationalising norms for canvassing, according to an official statement.
Gujarat
In Gujarat, the bye-election will be held in the Kadi and Visavadar constituencies to fill the posts of Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki who passed away in February this year and the resignation of Bhayani Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai.
Kerala
In Kerala, the bye-election will be held in Nilambur to fill the post of PV Anvar, an LDF-backed MLA who resigned in January this year. He was appointed convenor of the Kerala unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Punjab
In Punjab, the bye-election will be held in Ludhiana West to fill the post of Gurpreet Bassi Gogi after his demise their January.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for upcoming by-elections in four states-Punjab, Gujarat, West Bengal and Kerala. Polling will be conducted on June 19 and counting is schedule to take place from June 23. In Gujarat, by-polls will be organised in the Visavadar Assembly and Kadi constituencies. These elections will take place in view of resignation of Bhayani Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai and death of Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki.

Meanwhile, in Kerala, the Nilambur seat is lying empty as PV Anvar, supported by the LDF, gave his resignation in January. After putting down his papers, he has taken charge of the post of convenor of the Trinamool Congress Kerala Unit.

ECI’s voter-friendly measures
Along with the schedule, the ECI also announced new means for improving the voter experience. Attributing the increasing use of mobile phones and the challenges they pose, particularly for the elderly and PwD voters, the Commission has launched a mobile deposit facility outside polling stations.
Under the latest norms, voters will need to submit their mobile phones in a switched off mode in designated boxes or in jute boxes before entering the polling booth. No mobile polls phones will be allowed inside the polling stations. Although exemptions may apply at some booth depending on local circumstances.
ECI’s campaigning norms
To ensure streamlined poll-day management, the ERCI has also updated rules for canvassing. Campaigning will not be allowed within a 100-meter radius of the polling station on the polling day. Booths set up by the candidate for issuing an unofficial voter slip must stay outside the boundary.
The ECI, headed by the Chief Election Commissioner, Gynaesh Kumar, and Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi restated its commitment for voter friendly and transparent elections.
