Footage of the President of France, 47, apparently being shoved by his wife Brigitte as they disembarked a plane in Hanoi, Vietnam, went viral earlier this week.
The Élysée initially tried to dismiss the clip, as local media reported that the official residence of the French president claimed that the video could have been AI-generated.
But Macron’s team were forced to perform a dramatic U-turn on this stance a short time later – especially after body language experts and lip readers started sharing their assessments of the situation.

“There’s a video showing me joking and teasing my wife and somehow that becomes a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe, with people even coming up with theories to explain it,” Macron said.
“The videos are all real, and yes, sometimes people tamper with them, but people are attributing all kinds of nonsense to them.”
He also admitted he and Brigitte had been ‘squabbling, or rather joking’, while adding that he had been ‘taken by surprise’.

If you ask a lip reading expert what was going on with the pair though, you will likely get a very different answer.

One claimed that they saw Brigitte tell her husband to ‘stay away’ and branded him a ‘loser’, while the French president supposedly responded: “Let’s try, please.”
A body language expert has backed this theory up too, challenging the suggestion that this was merely a ‘playful’ exchange between the couple.
Judi James said: “Pushing your partner in the face with your hand so hard their head reels to the side and they need to put a hand out to keep balance, especially with what looks like an extra ‘shove’ at the end of the contact, should not be normalised by calling it ‘fun’ just to save political face.”

If Macron really is trying to save face, he’s giving it more than a good go – as he appeared to mock ‘shove-gate’ while departing the presidential plane with his wife in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday (28 May).
As he and Brigitte assumed almost identical positions in the aircraft as they did after landing in Vietnam, he stuck his hand out of the open doors to give the waiting press a wave.
Macron was then seen laughing as he waited for his wife, who is 25 years his senior, to take hold of his arm to descend the steps – an offering which she had refused on Monday after the alleged collision with her fella’s face.
Sources said the couple’s united front was deliberately staged to take the mickey out of the media frenzy which unfolded earlier this week, the Telegraph reported.

French officials were insisting the original incident was ‘playful teasing’ between a loving husband and wife, with another source insisting it was a ‘harmless scuffle’.
Macron was seen gesturing that cameras were there shortly after the ‘slap’ took place.
A source even blames the backlash on ‘pro-Russia circles’ for blowing it out of proportion.

Macron could not understand why it had escalated into some ‘sort of geo-planetary catastrophe’.
The official then urged people to take a step back and ‘calm down’.
Macron has insisted: “My wife and I were squabbling, we were rather joking, and I was taken by surprise.

The couple have been married for almost 20 years, but their union has always proved to be controversial.
Emmanuel was notably just 15 years old when he met Brigitte, who was 25 years older than him, a mother-of-three, and was also his teacher at the time.
She previously told the press how their bond deepened while working on a school play.
Brigitte told Elle France: “In that theatre workshop, we wrote plays together – our relationship was one of artistic equality. It was when we worked on the Eduardo De Filippo play The Art of Comedy.
“We wrote together on Friday nights – and by Saturday, I couldn’t wait for Friday to come around. I didn’t understand why. It seemed insane.”
Macron also laid other rumours to rest, telling the press in Hanoi: “For three weeks… There are people who have watched videos and think I shared a bag of cocaine, that I had a fight with the Turkish president, and that now I’m having a domestic dispute with my wife.
“None of these are true.”

In a video which went viral, Brigitte was seen ‘slapping’ or ‘pushing’ Macron’s face just as the doors for their plane opened as they arrived for an official visit to Hanoi, Vietnam.
During the moment, the 72-year-old is not seen entirely, with only her arm extended out into frame as she pushes the President’s face. She places both hands on him and seems to give him a hefty shove.

Macron, who was in full view of the cameras, tried to play it cool in front of the media.
The couple then began to descend the stairs, and Brigitte seemed to snub her husband’s gesture to hold his arm and walked separately.
The 47-year-old French politician has since then spoken out about the incident, saying it was a harmless ‘joke’ between the couple, which has been blown out of proportion.
However, a professional lip reader has since then claimed that this might not be true. According to the expert, the body language displayed by Brigitte when she descended the stairs points to it being a more serious spat than they are letting on.
“As the aircraft door opens, President Macron is seen turning toward Brigitte. In an unexpected moment, she pushes him in the face. Speaking to the media, he clarified, “We are squabbling and, rather, joking with my wife.”
He shrugged off the seriousness of it and stated that the media frenzy around the moment made it seem like it was some ‘sort of geo-planetary catastrophe.’
“Everyone needs to calm down,” he stated.
An official for Elysee also downplayed the incident, saying it was not serious at all.
“It was a moment where the president and his wife were decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by horsing around. It’s a moment of complicity. It was all that was needed to give ammunition to the conspiracy theorists,” they said.
