Whether your dream remote-work backdrop features moody Icelandic scenery or long stretches of Brazilian coastline, there are plenty of countries offering digital nomad visas right now.

Cities like Lisbon regularly top the rankings as great all-round destinations for remote workers – but while you might pick a digital nomad destination based on stuff like weather, affordability and salary requirements, one factor that’s particularly important for woman-identifying travellers is safety.

To help women narrow down their options, travel booking platform Holidu has looked into the best and safest cities for female digital nomads in 2025. The study analysed the top 200 cities for digital nomads (according to Nomads.com) based on factors including how safe it is for women to walk alone, friendliness to women and foreigners, the ratio of male to female nomads, and local legislation on workplace sexual harassment.

And outside of working hours, the Taiwanese capital has bags of brilliant culture and nature to explore. The Red House is the city’s first public market, which has been around since 1908, and functions as a hub for design, cultural events and the city’s LGBTQ+ community, all in one place.

For some fresh air where you can still soak up the city’s iconic skyline, don your walking boots and head to Elephant Mountain for the Xiangshan Hiking Trail.

Taipei isn’t the only Taiwanese city to make the list though – Kaohsiung, a port city on the island’s southwestern coast, comes in seventh place. If Asia’s calling your name, here’s the full list of Asia’s safest countries for female nomads. Read on for the global top 10.

Singapore is also the 4th most affordable country in the list

Our tiny but mighty country continues to prove that size doesn’t matter – from being a favourite foodie destination to having stellar hotels and one of the best airlines in the world. And here’s the latest crowning moment: Singapore has just been named the fourth best destination in the world for solo female travellers.

A recent study by the scuba website DIPNDIVE rated major tourist destinations by analysing the country’s safety levels, accommodation prices, cost of living, weather, English proficiency level and the overall hospitality.

According to the report, Singapore ranked second on the safety index with a score of 77.4, after Zagreb, Croatia, which received a score of 78.6. A slight surprise, given that we were previously crowned as the safest city in the world by Forbes Advisor in 2024, but still a healthy score nonetheless.

Our average cost of living unfortunately hit the four-figure sum, at $1,127. For reference, Zagreb’s was $802, Warsaw was $796, and Budapest was $708. Other cities to have hit the thousand mark include New York City ($1,668), Berlin ($1,081), and Helsinki ($1,067).

But we’re focusing on travellers for this list, so hotel costs were also taken into account. On average, it costs $46 per night for a stay at one of Singapore’s cheapest hotels. We’ve also got a good number of free tourist attractions, and a rather high friendliness level of 76.

Here are the best cities for solo female travellers:

Helsinki Zagreb Berlin Singapore Warsaw Chicago Madrid Vienna New York Budapest

I’m a female solo traveller – this is the surprising safest country in the world

A female solo traveller has compiled a list of the safest destinations in the world – and her top pick may surprise you.

Zara Aitken, from Somerset, has spent the last ten years travelling the world on her own.

She leads a digital nomad lifestyle by making a part-time income from her travel blog Passport for Living as well as working as a Project Coordinator for a UK-based charity.

As a longtime advocate for solo female travel, Zara compiled a list of the places she has felt the safest on her own.

‘Does this mean that each of these countries is 100 per cent safe?’ she wrote in a recent blog post. ‘Of course not.

‘Naturally, you have to take safety precautions everywhere you travel, but these countries provided me with an enriching experience that I can’t wait to share with you.’

One of Zara’s top picks? Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Despite there being substantial discrimination against women in the UAE, according to Human Rights Watch, Zara found Abu Dhabi to be ‘one of the best travel destinations for solo female travellers’.

Zara described Abu Dhabi as ‘one of the best travel destinations for solo female travellers’, recommending a visit to the Louvre (pictured)

‘I started solo travelling ten years ago,’ Zara exclusively told MailOnline, ‘and never thought I’d have the courage to visit places such as Africa and Asia alone.

‘Starting off by visiting cities in Europe, I built my confidence until I felt brave enough to take on places like Botswana, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.

‘I had heard that the UAE is one of the safest places in the world to visit due to its low crime rates, and I really experienced the friendliness of the people there.’

In a recent blog post on Passport for Living, Zara recommends the ‘beautiful beaches’ including Corniche Beach with its five miles of white sand and turquoise water – as well as visiting the Louvre museum in Abu Dhabi.

Posting a picture of her wearing a green headscarf outside of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Zara reminds her readers that they should dress according to the ‘cultural and societal norms in the UAE’.

She told MailOnline: ‘It’s important to acknowledge the culture of each place you visit, and I felt the people were grateful that I respected their culture by dressing and acting appropriately and in turn, they respected me too.’

Also on Zara’s list of the destinations perfect for solo female travellers is Maun, Botswana.

Known as the gateway to the UNESCO-listed Okavango Delta, Maun is a small town in the north of the landlocked country.

With its relatively low crime rates, Zara reveals that Maun (pictured) is ‘well worth a visit’

The small town is located near the UNESCO-listed Okavango Delta (pictured) which is famous for its wildlife

Although Zara admits that there is not much to do in the town itself, she said that the Delta is worth a visit as it is one of the last places with untouched wilderness on the planet.

‘This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with wildlife everywhere, stunning sunsets and even more amazing people,’ she said.

‘I cannot wait to go back to Botswana to explore more of the Delta.’

Compared to other African countries, crime rates in Botswana are very low, according to Lonely Planet.

The only issue Zara encountered was men catcalling her on the streets when she was walking alone – but she emphasised this would not prevent her from returning to the southern African country in the future.

The first place Zara travelled to on her own was Paris, France, which also features on her list.

Despite being very nervous on the trip, she fell head over heels for the City of Love and has visited on her own three more times since.

As well as wandering through the whimsical streets and exploring renowned locations such as the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triumph, Zara most enjoys sipping a coffee in a Parisian café.

Zara said that Corfu in Greece (pictured) is perfect for a self-catering holiday as a women travelling on their own

With one of the lowest crime rates on the planet, Zara also recommends that solo female travellers add Reykjavik, Iceland to their bucket list – as well as the idyllic Greek island of Corfu.

After exploring Australia in a campervan for a month, the Land Down Under also earned a mention in Zara’s blog post.

With English as its national language, Zara found it easy to make friends with fellow backpackers in Australia so she did not have to traverse the outback alone.

The only thing you need to be wary of in Australia, according to Zara, is the wildlife.

‘From snakes and spiders to crocs and jellyfish, it seems everything in Australia wants to kill you,’ she wrote.

‘So it’s wise to avoid hiking alone and join a group tour if you do want to embark on a hike, just to be safe.’
