The ship was bound for Rotterdam with a load of Estonia’s shale oil, the Estonian Transport Administration said. Western sanctions on Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022 have led to a vast “shadow fleet” of tankers crossing the sea to help Moscow keep its crude oil exports flowing. Only last week, Estonia said that Moscow had briefly sent a fighter jet over the Baltic Sea during Estonia’s attempt to stop a Russian-bound oil tanker. The navigation channel has been set up under an agreement between Estonia, Finland and Russia to avoid shallows in Estonian waters.

The Russian Federation on May 18 detained an oil tanker sailing from the Estonian port of Sillamae. The oil tanker Green Admire was a Greek-owned vessel sailing under a Liberian flag. It departed from Estonia following a previously agreed-upon route via Russian territorial waters. The route was “selected for its maritime safety” and “not aligned strictly along national boundaries” Estonia plans to redirect traffic through its own territorial waters as a precaution.
