“I think it was a really sore blow for Hibs at the end of last season,” McGowan told the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast.
“They were looking forward to automatic group-stage football, with the possibility of £5m guaranteed, and then Aberdeen snatched it away from them.
“So it’s been quite a big investment by them signing a £1m striker for a club which, over the last two seasons, has lost an accumulated £12m. They could really do it with securing group-stage football.
“Midtjylland will be be no mugs. The incentive for Hibs is that they if get through they’ll take on Frederikstad of Norway who look very much beatable.
“Rhere’s every financial incentive for Hibs to get there because they are throwing the kitchen sink at it in terms of signings and they need to get some money in the door.”
