This week’s broadcast of Eye on Travel is a special edition from the Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum in Shannon, Ireland. It’s where, back in the 1930s, Pan Am pioneered transatlantic flight aboard the big Boeing Flying Boats. Peter has all the travel updates, including the new TSA rules on shoes (but what about liquids?), and which airlines are cutting back on their flights this summer. And then, a deep dive into aviation history, with America’s premier flag carrier: Pan Am. The brand has been resuscitated, first with a special flight retracing the original Pan Am Atlantic air routes. A specially configured 757 flew from New York to Bermuda, then Lisbon, Marseilles, London, and finally Shannon. Its radio call sign: “Clipper 101” — a designation that hasn’t been heard in 34 years. And onboard — a very special passenger load — the sons and daughters of Pan Am pilots, retired Pan Am flight attendants, historians, and pilots. All reliving their history, as well as the airline that flew its last commercially scheduled flight on December 4, 1991. A truly sentimental journey. And one other “historian” was on the flight — Peter flew Pan Am from the age of 12 until the very end. And he also answers your travel questions as well. There’s all this and more on this edition of Eye on Travel.
