3 QUESTIONS…
about self-care
It’s International Self-Care Day. I asked Yahoo Lifestyle Editor Erin Donnelly about some easy ways to focus more on your physical, mental and emotional well-being.
Lily: Why is it important to focus on self-care?
Erin: It’s trite but true: You’ve got to put your own oxygen mask on first. There will always be demands on your time, but if you’re not taking care of yourself — getting good sleep, eating right, finding ways to unwind — everything falls apart.
Lily: What are some examples of self-care?
Erin: For some it’s a spa day. For others it’s doing something therapeutic or saying no to things that bring on stress. My suggestions: Switch off your phone. Take a nap, hit the gym or get into your hobbies. My personal favorite is reading in the bath — I have a little bath caddy so the pages don’t get wet.
Lily: How can I make self-care part of my regular routine beyond just today?
Erin: It’s hard! I know folks who swear by Self-Care Sunday, when it’s easier to carve out time to relax, play music or wear a sheet mask all day. You can also try making a list of different self-care ideas and pick one to focus on each week. For example, go for a “wonder walk” after work every day for a week.
