CLAIRTON, Pa. (WPVI) — Two people are dead following an explosion at a US steel plant in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Monday.
Now, an investigation into how this happened is underway.
The incident was at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works plant in Clairton.
One victim has been identified as Timothy Quinn, a father of three.
One victim has been identified as Timothy Quinn, a father of three.
The second individual, who was found dead on Monday night, has not yet been identified.
Ten other people were injured, and five of those remain in critical condition after the explosion trapped people under rubble, prompting a rescue operation, according to Allegheny County officials.
One worker was rescued from the smoldering rubble hours later.
Five of the injured have been treated and released, officials said.
“Lori and I are eternally thankful for the bravery of our first responders — and we continue to pray for the entire Clairton community,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said on social media.
The U.S. Steel facility, which is about 15 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, processes raw components that go into steel making. It is one of four major plants in Pennsylvania owned by U.S. Steel, an icon of the domestic steel industry and American industrialization for over a century.
The plant is in the Mon Valley, a region of the state synonymous with steel.
The explosion inside a battery operating area at the plant was reported at 10:51 a.m., and “multiple secondary explosions” were reported after that, Allegheny County officials said.
The blast could be felt in the nearby community and prompted county officials to warn residents to stay away from the scene so emergency workers could respond.
David B. Burritt, president and CEO of U.S. Steel, said in a statement, “We are working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the incident.”
“Nearly 1,300 dedicated men and women work at the Clairton Plant each day, performing their jobs with the utmost safety,” Burritt said. “During times like this, U.S. Steel employees come together to extend their love, prayers, and support to everyone affected.”
The city lifted its air quality advisory Monday night after the conditions were deemed safe.
The Allegheny County Health Department is monitoring the incident and Innamorato said the department’s “air quality monitors have not detected a rise in PM 2.5 [ fine inhalable particles under 2.5 micrometers ] or sulfur dioxide above federal standards.”
Coke is made by baking coal in special ovens for hours at high temperatures, which removes impurities that could otherwise weaken steel. The process creates what’s known as coke gas – made up of a lethal mix of methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.
This isn’t the first explosion at the plant.
Earlier this year, two workers had minor injuries when a buildup of combustible material caught fire.
