Federal charges filed against 2 for string of 2024 bank, business robberies in Kansas City

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri says that on Wednesday, July 16, Makih A. Hall, 21, and Lazaro Medina-Lopez, 29, both of Kansas City, were charged with the crimes in a federal indictment.
Court documents noted that the pair has been charged with conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, Hobbs Act robbery and two counts of bank robbery in an indictment that was unsealed on Friday.
The Department of Justice noted that the Hobbs Act bars actual or attempted robbery, or extortion, that affects interstate or foreign commerce.
Court records indicated that Hall has also been charged with an additional count of attempted Hobbs Act robbery and Medina-Lopez faces an additional count of attempted bank robbery.
The indictment alleges that between June 1 and June 14, 2024, the pair robbed or attempted to rob several banks, credit unions and businesses in the Kansas City metro.
Under federal statutes, if convicted, each charge holds a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. A sentencing hearing will be set at the completion of an investigation by the U.S. Probation Office.
The case continues to be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Q. McCarther and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Kansas City Police Department and the Independence Police Department.
