Important Travel Updates For ECDL Holders This Summer

New York State Department of MotorVehicles was advised by the Transportation Security Administration that the problems with TSA staff at airports scanning New York State Enhanced Commercial Driver Licenses is linked to the TSA’s ID scanners used at airports. A system update that TSA believes may fix the problem is expected to be implemented later in July. Until that happens, travelers who have an Enhanced Commercial driver’s License are encouraged to bring additional identification with them when flying.

Heading out this summer to a destination requiring flying? Hopefully, the adventure to your destination will be smooth sailing… or should I say, flying?

First, from a release from the Broome County Office of the County Clerk, Joseph Mihalko on July 9th (2025), the New York State Department of MotorVehicles was advised by the Transportation Security Administration that the problems with TSA staff at airports scanning New York State Enhanced Commercial Driver Licenses is linked to the TSA’s ID scanners used at airports.

A system update that Transportation Security Administration believes may fix the problem is expected to be implemented later in July. Until that happens, travelers who have an Enhanced Commercial Driver’s License are encouraged to bring additional identification with them when flying.

Secondly, according to a report by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), nationwide, when travelers arrive at the TSA checkpoint, the requirement to remove shoes at the security checkpoint will no longer be required.

Ending the ‘Shoes-Off’ policy is the latest effort DHS is implementing to modernize and enhance the traveler experience across our nation’s airports. We expect this change will drastically decrease passenger wait times at our TSA checkpoints, leading to a more pleasant and efficient passenger experience.
