Former Indiana volleyball assistant coach Brett Agne received a two-year show-cause order from the NCAA on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Agne ― who was dismissed as an assistant in 2023 ― received the sanction related to impermissible sports wagering, according to the NCAA. The case summary from the NCAA shows Agne “placed impermissible bets on professional and collegiate games over a five-month period.”

The Hoosiers fired Agne after learning of the activity in 2023.

“Agne did not bet on the Indiana volleyball team but did bet on other teams at Indiana,” the report said. “Agne and the enforcement staff agreed that Agne used online betting platforms to place more than 700 bets totaling $327,000. Of those bets, 27 were on the Indiana football or men’s basketball programs.”

According to the NCAA report, Agne admitted to using “an unregulated computer program to place bets on games automatically based on an algorithm, and as a result, he was not aware of which games he was betting on — including the Indiana games.”

“A two-year show-cause order for Agne, in which any employing member school must require Agne to complete meaningful sports betting education and provide sports betting education to his peers,” the penalty summary stated. “A suspension from 10 regular-season contests (the equivalent of 30% of the women’s volleyball regular season) during the 2026 season. During that suspension, Agne cannot participate in any coaching activities, including being present or communicating with women’s volleyball coaching staff members or student-athletes; and a public reprimand and censure through the release of the negotiated resolution agreement.”
