Former Packers and other celebrities hit the field in Beloit for Make-A-Wish Wisconsin
The first Border Brouhaha Charity Softball Game was played Sunday. Former Packers’ receiver Jordy Nelson was one of the players. Olympic speedskating legend Bonnie Blair got into it with the home plate umpire over balls and strikes. The game raised $15,000 for Make-A-Wish Wisconsin. The wives and children of Nelson and Crosby also participated as pinch hitters and pinch runners.“Let’s come back next year. Have a great one,” said Crosby over the loud speaker following the event.
Former Packers’ receiver Jordy Nelson was one of the players, and so was former Packers’ kicker and all-time scoring leader Mason Crosby. They were the captains of Team Illinois and Team Wisconsin.
Two other former Packers also played, punter Tim Masthay, and linebacker Brad Jones.
Current Fighting Illini running back Ca’Lil Valentine was one of the stars for Team Illinois.
Team Wisconsin had Olympic speedskating legend Bonnie Blair. She got into it with the home plate umpire over balls and strikes. All in good fun.
The entire day was all good fun. The wives and children of Nelson and Crosby also participated as pinch hitters and pinch runners. Other local celebrities also played.
Nelson says there are multiple reasons why he enjoys participating in these charity events.
“There’s multiple things. One obviously is getting to be back around the guys, like Tim and Brad Jones I hadn’t seen for a while. Mason I’ve seen for a little bit here and there, and then just being in different communities. Still being able to give back to the communities that supported us for so many years being in Green Bay.”
I asked Nelson if he would be going full throttle during the softball game.
“It’ll be a full throttle swing every time. After that we’ll see, but hopefully it’s (hit) far enough that I don’t have to go full throttle running.”
Jordy Nelson going at 75% is still better than most softball players at 100%. He won a Home Run Derby before the game, and then he blasted two more home runs during the game. Despite his efforts, his team, Team Illinois, lost to Team Wisconsin 11-7.
Let’s come back next year. Let’s get this thing going. Have a great one,” said Crosby over the loud speaker following the event.
The best part about the day was the game raised $15,000 for Make-A-Wish Wisconsin.
