VanVleet, 31, just finished his second season in Houston where he averaged 14.1 points, 5.6 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 60 games. After claiming the No. 2 seed in the West, the Rockets fell in seven games to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs. He spent the first seven seasons of his NBA career with the Toronto Raptors where he helped them to the 2019 NBA title.
VanVleet’s new deal comes days after the Rockets added 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns in a trade for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and the No. 10 pick in Wednesday’s NBA draft, plus five second-round picks as part of the trade.
The Rockets signed VanVleet in 2023 to a three-year, $128.5 million contract that included a team option for the third year. Houston improved by 19 wins in his first season and then won 52 this past season to return to the postseason for the first time since 2019-20.
Rockets to sign Fred VanVleet to new $50 million deal

The Rockets will reportedly decline VanVleet’s $44.9 million team option for next season, but will bring back the 31-year-old through the 2026-27 season. The second year of the deal includes a player option.
VanVleet’s return at a cheaper price will give the Rockets some flexibility and allows the guard to re-enter free agency when cap space across the league will be more plentiful.
Per Charania, both sides “believe in a partnership for years to come beyond the two years.”
VanVleet averaged 14.1 points in the 2024-25 regular season, but averaged 18.7 points in the Rockets’ first-round series loss to the Golden State Warriors.
