For 2025, the most popular trainer silhouettes have taken a slimline approach, with the ‘Sneakerina’ trend and retro gymnasium styles finding the most favour following the huge demand for the Adidas Samba and Spezial last year.

This year is seeing a more democratic approach to the trainer, rather than one brand ruling steadfast. While Adidas are still hovering at the top — its Taekwondo style cinched the number two spot in Lyst’s 2025 Q1 Index — Puma also successfully landed at number three on the hottest products chart with its sporty Speedcat style.

Even luxury brands are putting their money on trainers in a bigger way than usual; Louis Vuitton just released its Sneakerina design in its bid for the trend, while Miu Miu, Ferragamo, Loewe and Proenza Schouler are among the high-fashion names pitching in with variations of retro and track-inspired styles.

Taking over the reigns from its Samba predecessor, Adidas’ SL72s are the brand’s modern take on the retro style first introduced in — as the name might have given away — 1972. Like the Speedcat, the SL72 had a practical beginning, originally designed to create a ‘superlight’ trainer that would improve athlete’s speed and agility on the track. More recently, Bella Hadid — a long-time fan of the brand — has proved the style credentials of these trainers, sporting them with candid denim looks while out and about.

You’re not seeing double, the Speedcat has made the list of celebrity-favourite styles twice. The Ballet, a ballerina-inspired iteration of the shoe features an open-top design with thin straps crossing along the foot. They might take warming up to, but the Sneakerina style has proclaimed itself as the hottest trainer trend this year, and if that doesn’t sway you, perhaps Dua Lipa’s seal of approval might.
