Gambhira Bridge collapse: Death toll rises to 17; resuce ops continue
The death toll in the Gambhira Bridge collapse in Gujarat’s Vadodara district rose to 17 on July 10. The 40-year-old structure caved in, dragging multiple vehicles into the Mahisagar River. Four people remain untraced, and anxious relatives, desperate for updates, are camped along the riverbank.
The incident unfolded when two trucks, two pickups, a rickshaw, and several two-wheelers were passing over the aging bridge. In a matter of seconds, the structure gave way, plunging them into the river that flows on both sides of the bridge. 17 people have been confirmed dead, while more than eight were rescued in a overnight operation.
Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya, who is personally supervising the rescue at the site, said, “The death toll stands at 15 as of now. We have already recovered the Eeco car and a pickup van, and we are using heavy mechanical power to extract the trucks. Our search for more dead bodies is intense and ongoing. I am present at the site and overseeing the operations here. A high-level technical team is also inspecting the bridge and figuring out the cause behind the collapse.”
Following the Collector’s statement, later in the afternoon, rescue teams recovered two additional bodies, pushing the death toll to 17.
As rescue operations continued into July 10, the despair of families waiting for their missing loved ones deepened. Four people remain untraced, and anxious relatives, desperate for updates, are camped along the riverbank.

A portion of the Gambhira bridge, which connects Vadodara and Anand, collapsed on Wednesday, sending vehicles plummeting into the Mahisagar river below.
Vadodara collector Anil Dhameliya told reporters that teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are continuing search operations, covering up to 4km downstream.
He added that an empty tanker is still precariously positioned on the collapsed structure.
“Stabilisation work is underway as rescue operations are being carried out beneath the bridge. Moving the tanker without caution could cause it to fall,” he said after inspecting the site.
Senior officials from the local administration, including the district collector, have been on-site since Wednesday, overseeing relief and rescue efforts.
Vadodara superintendent of police Rohan Anand said earlier that a 10-15 metre section of the bridge had caved in. Two trucks, two pickup vans, and a rickshaw fell into the river, while two vehicles remain stranded on the bridge.
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel also declared financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
