Roma, is it right to invest such sums in the South American market?
Roma are preparing to play their first game of the season against Bologna on August 23. The Italian champions have been linked with a move for Real Madrid’s Angel di Maria. The Spanish club have also shown an interest in a number of other young players. The deal for Di Maria is expected to be worth around £20million.
Meanwhile, the transfer market is getting into full swing and the new DS Frederic Massara hopes to close the double deal in South America that would bring the full-back to the capital Wesley and midfielder Richard Rivers. The young Colombian, author of an excellent Club World Cup with his palm trees, has attracted the interest of many clubs but so far the most tempting offer has come from the Capitoline club, who seem willing to spend up to 30 million euro for the class 2000.
For the full-back, however, the offer made to Flamengo is around 25 million euros and white smoke could arrive in the next few hours.
Roma’s recent history with South American players, however, is a bit surprising. First, the very unfortunate interlude Iturbe, with the Paraguayan winger who disappointed the expectations of those who thought they had snatched an absolute talent from Juventus Recently, however, another South American has arrived in trigory without leaving an indelible memory: it is Matias Wine, current teammate of Wesley al flamingo.
