Google fought long and hard to get RCS messaging to become the standard. It had a very loud campaign just a couple of years ago targeting Apple, and now that it’s in more customers’ hands, it needs to smooth out the bumps in the road to ensure a comfortable experience.

Of course, it’s gotten better over time, with updates bringing new features that will eventually bring end-to-end encryption between Android and iPhones. And now it seems like some are seeing the ability to edit RCS messages that have been sent to iPhones from Android devices.

It’s still half-baked though

The news comes from Android Authority, and, while exciting, it doesn’t look to be ready quite yet, and might even be in testing. You can check to see if you have access to the feature, but it’s probably not even worth trying out at this point since it isn’t fully functional anyway.

But if you want to give it a go, just make sure that the iPhone user is running iOS 18.5 or the latest beta software. When it comes to the implementation, you go through the usual motions of editing the message on your phone. Where the problem lies is on the receiving end, as the iPhone user will apparently get a new message instead of an edited one.

Perhaps the biggest blow here is that iPhone users won’t be able to edit any RCS messages sent to Android users. So, as stated before, this isn’t really one worth even taking a look at, at this point, since it’s not really up and running. Of course, it’s something to keep an eye out for because it makes a huge difference in how you interact with people through messages.

Just make sure to test it out with a close friend thoroughly to understand the limitations between Android and iPhone interactions. With that said, there’s a big chance that all of this will get ironed out with the introduction of the latest version of iOS when it lands on public devices later this year. The update should introduce end-to-end RCS encryption between Android and iPhone, and could even fix the issue mentioned above.

Of course, even though those issues get sorted, RCS messaging with Google Messages is still a mixed bag when it comes to overall experience. Despite Google’s huge push to make RCS a thing, it still relies on carrier support. Furthermore, there’s no reliable way to transfer messages from one device to another. However, Google Messages and RCS are still in their infancy, so it still has a long way to go.
