Uncomplicated Super-Gonorrhea Treated with First-in-Class Oral Antibiotic
Zoliflodacin, a first-in-class antibiotic, met its primary endpoint in an unprecedented global pivotal phase 3 clinical trial. The phase 3 trial enrolled a total of 930 patients with uncomplicated gonorrhea, including women, adolescents, and people living with HIV. It is the largest clinical trial ever conducted for a new treatment against Gonorrhea infection, with 16 trial sites in regions with a high prevalence of the infection across five countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand, and the U.S. As a result, ceftriaxone, given as a single intramuscular injection, has become the last available recommended treatment for gonococcal infections globally. The Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership (GARDP) has the right to register and commercialize the product in more than three-quarters of the world’s countries. It was created by the World Health Organization and the Neglected Diseases Drugs for Health initiative in 2016.

Pan-Canadian Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance
Ministers of Health and Agriculture release Pan-Canadian Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance. Action plan is a five-year blueprint to coordinate an accelerated pan-Canadian response to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) Action to reduce AMR and preserve antimicrobial effectiveness helps to minimize an economic threat to the agriculture industry and maintain food security. Ministers: We call on all relevant One Health partners to join us and work together to improve the appropriate use of antimicrobials and reduce the spread of AMR. The lands on which we developed this action plan are the homelands of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. We acknowledge our privilege to live and work on these lands and continue in striving to foster respectful partnerships with Indigenous Peoples and working collaboratively to advance reconciliation in Canada. In 2022, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) AMR Task Force resumed efforts to update and finalize the action plan under the guidance of the FPT Steering Committee. Nearly 15 people in Canada were estimated to have lost their lives to antimicrobial infections in 2018.

Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance and Antimicrobial Use: A Pan-Canadian Framework for Action
The rapid emergence and spread of antimicrobial-resistant infections is exacerbated by the widespread use of antimicrobials in human and veterinary medicine and in the agriculture industry. Canada is actively engaged in global efforts to fight AMR and has committed multisectoral support to the implementation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Action Plan on AMR. The Framework is grounded in a One Health approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of humans, animals and the environment. The primary focus of the Framework is on bacterial resistance to antibiotics. This issue is of the utmost concern and warrants urgent action due to the significant threat it presents to human and animal health. Left unchecked, AMR could cause a return to a pre-antibiotic era in which common infections could once again become incurable, with grave consequences to the health of Canadians and populations world-wide.
